The SOUTHERN PLAINS-IROQUOIS ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION schools unite to stress sportsmanship and good citizenship. Good sports-manship is resisting any negative behavior that tends to influence the outcome of a contest. Sportsmanship is conduct that imposes self-control involving honest rivalry, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of results. Positive school and community spirit is a reflection of these atti-tudes and behavior.
Athletics is a laboratory in which such values as sportsmanship, honesty, dedication, teamwork, self-discipline, loyalty and cooperation are learned and practiced. We urge patrons, parents, students and guests to keep the purpose of athletics in perspective. Cheer for you team, not against oppo-nents or officials.
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SPORTSMANSHIP• Gain an understanding and appreciation for the rules of
the contest.• Exercise representative behavior at all times.• Recognize and appreciate skilled performances, regard-
less of affiliation.• Exhibit respect for officials.• Display openly a respect for the opponent at all times.• Display pride in your actions at every opportunity.
SPIAA extends an invitation to all friends and fans to join us in con-veying this attitude to officials, teams, and visiting supporters. We know coaches, players and officials will be making honest mistakes. For fans to belabor mistakes is futile and potentially harmful. We ask from our coach-es, players and fans to desist from any negative action that tends to influ-ence the outcome of a contest. Support should be directed to building up our own teams, not to intimidate or ridicule our opponents or officials.
Sportsmanship is Good Citizenship. It is Contagious -- Catch It!

2019 SPIAA LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
BIG READIn the fall of 2016, English language arts teachers from
across the Southern Plains Iroquois Activities Associa-tion (SPIAA) met at South Gray High School where the idea of hosting an SPIAA Big Read was developed. Harper Lee’s To Kill Mockingbird was chosen as the common text for 2017.
Having successfully completed the first SPIAA Big Read, a new title was chosen for 2018-2019. Students in SPIAA high schools were invited to read and partici-pate in activities related to Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. The 2018-2019 SPIAA High School Big Read in-cluded a league-wide meeting hosted by Kiowa County High School that included discussion-based activities.
In an expansion of the original project, a junior high/middle school title was also selected. SPIAA students in grades 6-8 were invited to read and participate in ac-tivities related to Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. The SPIAA Junior High Big Read included a league-wide meeting hosted by Satanta, which included Hunger Games-inspired activities, a live-action Reaping provid-ed by members of the Kiowa County High School foren-sics team, and a viewing of Catching Fire.
The project portion of the Big Read includes a display of top student work here in the lobby of United Wire-less Arena. Please enjoy the work of these students.
