Women have been part of Indiana University for 150 of its nearly 200 years, instrumental ac-
tors in the development of its excellence and its institutional character. And yet, to look
around IU’s campuses we see relatively few examples of institutional recognition for these
contributions, in either symbolic or physical form. The University’s Bicentennial affords a
unique opportunity to uncover more of IU’s history as well as the stories of the many people of
diverse backgrounds who have made IU what it is today. From Sarah Parke Morrison, IU’s first
female student, faculty member, and philanthropist; to Alice MacDonald Nelson, who pio-
neered the system of residence education at IU and in higher education more broadly; to
Ingeborg Schmidt, a vision scientist who discovered the genetic marker for color blindness; to
Martha Dawson, whose work in multicultural education shaped generations of educators and
scholars; to Elinor Ostrom, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economics; and many
more, IU women have been changing the world. This talk will describe the projects underway
to bridge this visibility gap, including the Women’s Portrait Gallery in the IMU, and how they
are being fueled by women’s philanthropy today.

The Crimson Clover Irish Dancers at IU share Irish culture through dance on campus and in the Bloomington community. The team is comprised of dancers from beginner to world championship level. Practices emphasize both social dancing (called ceili) and performance-oriented solo dancing. We will enjoy live performances by Marah Harbison and Leigha Amick. Marah has been dancing for nearly twenty years and has danced at the World Champion-ships. Leigha recently qualified for the National Championships and continues to compete.

The Bicentennial Oral History Project: The People's History of IU
Kristin Leaman will discuss the benefits and challenges of building a university-
wide oral history program for the Indiana University Bicentennial in 2020.
Forging partnerships with all seven IU campuses, units, outreach and market-
ing, and managing student interns will be discussed from the early phase to a
fully-functioning program. A significant part of the project is to provide public
access to the oral history audio files and transcripts; this has been an ongoing
collaboration with IU Library Technologies with a launch goal of 2019. The mission of the IU Bicen-
tennial Oral History Project is to record, preserve, and make available for future generations the
memories and experiences of IU alumni, faculty and staff university-wide. Many of the documents
preserved in the Indiana University Archives are from president’s records and upper administra-

A big THANK YOU for the generous donations of our Life Members in 2017! With your help last year we purchased a microwave and a coffee pot for the Presidents’ Room kitchen, and also new sound system and sound board to accommodate the luncheon speakers, live music and PowerPoint presentations. We still need funds to refurbish the grand piano in the Faculty Room. Our top priority now is the pur-chase of a new office computer to replace our ten-year-old one, which we are nurs-ing along daily. We hope you will consider becoming a Life Sponsor by contrib-uting to the replacement fund and mailing your check today. Please make your check payable to the University Club. Your special gift, in any amount, will aid with the upkeep of our Club and maintain our beautiful rooms.

MAH JONGG
The University Club has a new Interest Group!
Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that originated in China. It is commonly played by four
players. The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese charac-
ters and symbols, although some regional variations may omit some tiles and/or add
unique tiles. In most variations, each player begins by receiving 13 tiles. In turn, players
draw and discard tiles until they complete a legal hand using the 14th drawn tile to form 4 melds (or sets) and a pair
(eye). The Mah Jongg group meets each Friday. For more information, please contact the group chair.
Currently we have two tables of Mah Jongg and are open to new members who know how to play or are interested
in learning the game. We are playing American style but may approach Chinese style later.

HIKING IN SOUTHERN INDIANA
The hiking group this year is doing four hikes, two at The Nature Conservancy properties and two on Sycamore
Land Trust properties. In the fall, hikers explored Green's Bluff in Owen County under the guidance of Angela
Sturdevant and the Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve under the guidance of Shane Gibson. We are
anticipating two hikes in the winter/spring season.
Six hearty souls hiked the Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve
on November 8th. Shane Gibson of the Sycamore Land Trust (SLT) was
our guide. He provided an interesting historical perspective about the area
as he guided us along the peninsula. The land was a part of Shawnee
Bluffs Camp owned by Indiana University Alumni Association. When the
camp was sold, 48-acres was preserved as hardwood forest with trails to
the peninsula. This property just north of the causeway on Lake Monroe
is nestled among the residential properties on Rush Ridge Road off Ind
446. We were welcomed to the shore by a persimmon tree with fruit to
taste. Hikers enjoyed the brisk, sunny weather and good company. The group's next hike will be in March so stay tuned for the details of where that will be. If you want to join this
group, contact Kathleen Boggess, kboggess44@gmail.com.
