University of Oulu Graduate School

21st May 2015 Advanced Materials (ADMA) Doctoral Programme Spring Seminar

1

Doctoral training principlesa dynamic view

Modern doctoral training needs to look for ways to balance:

Research excellence,

Knowledge creation for complex societal problem-solving and

Preparation of doctorate holders [also] for non-academic careers.

The implementation of the principles is significantly affected by:

Funding

Regulatory stability

Economic structure and

Openness to change (culture).

2

The early-stage researcher’s professional community

Young researchers, and their supervisors, can expect additional support from:

Research team

Collaborators

Local research community

Follow-up group members

Doctoral programme

Graduate school

Supervisors play a major role in ensuring that their trainees exploit these resources correctly

3

The bottom line

Assure innovative creativity in future generations of researchers.

The success of the mission depends strongly on the creation of personalized, interactive, professional communities, with the young researchers taking a central

position and role.

Supervisors play a key role in the creation of these communities.

The mission of the graduate school

4

Community spirit

Large communities need a structured environment and fair, flexible rules in order to survive, thrive and build for the future.

The Doctoral Training Plan is officially accepted by the Doctoral Training Committee after the Follow-up Group has recommended its acceptance. After the official acceptance the doctoral student will receive 3 ECTS in WebOodi: 920012J Doctoral Training Plan.

B. The Study Plan, Oodi-PSPThe doctoral degree includes a thesis and other studies representing 20–50 credits, depending on themajor (http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/studyrequirements). The Personal Study Plan (PSP) is part of theDoctoral Training Plan and is done in WebOodi. At least a draft of the PSP should be attached to theResearch Plan.

C. The Career PlanThe Career Plan can be written as a part of the section 2 of the Research Plan by evaluating one’s ownlearning objectives related to career planning. The other option is to present the Career Planseparately for the follow-up group in the meeting.

CHANGING TO THE NEW STUDY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MADE DURING THE YEAR 2015

11

Concerns those who:

were granted doctoral study rights before UniOGSbecame active (before 1.8.2011), and

have not already changed to the new study requirements, and

know that you will not complete your doctoral degree (thesis + studies) by the end of 2015.

Changing from the old study requirements to the new requirements

12

Done in one of the two ways (A or B) described below, depending on when the thesis manuscript is planned to be finished:

A. The thesis work and studies are not close to completion (or if the student wants this option)

A student who already has a follow-up group:

Write the Doctoral Training Plan and make the personal study plan in WebOodi (Oodi-PSP). Have a follow-up group meeting where the follow-up group reviews your Doctoral Training Plan and writes a

report The Doctoral Training Plan approved by the principal supervisor and the follow-up group is then send to

UniOGS with the follow-up group report The Doctoral Training Committee accepts the Doctoral Training Plan and PSP, and at the same time accepts

the change to the new study requirements. 920012J Doctoral Training Plan (3 ECTS) is registered in Oodi. If this also corresponds to the final report of the follow-up group (i.e. if the degree will be completed in one year or less), 920007J Follow-up group reports and meetings (1 ECTS) is registered in Oodi.

NOTE! The required obligatory UniOGS course 920002J Scientific Research and Ethics (2 ECTS) must be included in the study plan. If you have already taken a course that has a similar content, you can apply for credit transfer. The 920001J Introduction to Doctoral Training course is not mandatory for those transferring from the old requirements (1 ECTS credit must be obtained from other field-specific, or General education/Transferable skills studies to compensate this).

13

A student who does not have a follow-up group:

Find people willing to be members of your follow-up group. Collect the names of the members in the nomination form and submit the form to the graduate school.

The chair of the Doctoral Training Committee nominates your follow-up group. Write the Doctoral Training Plan and make the personal study plan in WebOodi (Oodi-PSP). Have a follow-up group meeting where the follow-up group reviews your Doctoral Training

Plan and writes a report The Doctoral Training Plan approved by the principal supervisor and the follow-up group is

then send to UniOGS with the follow-up group report. The Doctoral Training Committee accepts the Doctoral Training Plan and PSP, and at the same

time accepts the change to the new study requirements.

14

B. The thesis manuscript will be submitted for pre-examination by August 2015

The follow-up group is not mandatory. Write a research plan and a study plan (preferably Oodi-PSP). This corresponds to the Doctoral Training Plan.

The research plan can be based on the text in your thesis manuscript (for example the introduction). No ECTS are given for this.

The research and study plan must be approved either by your follow-up group, or by the management group (or equivalent) of the major, or a doctoral programme.

Send the approved research and study plan to UniOGS. The Doctoral Training Committee accepts the plans and at the same time accepts the change to the new study

requirements.

NOTE! The required obligatory UniOGS course 920002J Scientific Research and Ethics (2 ECTS) (or equivalent) must be included in the study plan.

920001J Introduction to Doctoral Training (1 ECTS) course is not mandatory (1 ECTS credit must be obtained from other field-specific, or General education/Transferable skills studies to compensate this).

You do not get ECTS from the approval of the plans. No ECTS credits will be given for: 920012J Doctoral Training Plan (3 ECTS), and 920007J The follow-up group reports and meetings (1 ECTS). To cover these courses. 4 ECTS credits must be obtained from other field-specific activities to compensate these).

15

If your thesis is sent to pre-examination during 2015 and all your studies are completed by 31.12.2015 and are registered in Oodi, it is possible to graduateaccording to the old study requirements.
