• High-Speed Internet Connection (DSL, Cable, Satellite)

• Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router– D-Link, Linksys, NetGear, 3Com

• Wireless Access Card– Most laptops bought today have wireless

capability built into the laptop– You can also purchase a wireless access

card. (D-link, Linksys, NetGear)

Wireless Local Area NetworksIEEE 802.11 Standard (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.)

• 802.11b (University)– 2.4-GHz band– 11 Mbps “raw” (throughput ~6 Mbps)

• 802.11a– 5-GHz band– 54 Mbps “raw” (throughput ~22 Mbps)

• 802.11g (Best and Most Common)– 2.4-GHz band– 54 Mbps “raw” (throughput ~22 Mbps)

• What is it?– A service to allow faculty, staff, and students

to connect wirelessly to the web.• What do I need?

– Laptop with built-in or wireless access card.– Students need a University myUWG account– Faculty and Staff need a University email

How to Setup Your Wireless Router

Wireless Router Security• Important things to know:

– Change the Default SSID name (network name)

– Disable the SSID Broadcast– Use Encryption such as WEP, WPA– Change the Default Username and

– Use NAT with DHCP, a feature built into most routers, so that outsiders can only see the router.

Getting a Stronger Signal

• Change the Channel.

• Move the router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects

• When possible put the router in a central location. Range is about 300 ft. indoors.

Setting up Your Client Computer

• If you have Odyssey Client installed you may need to disable it.

• Use the Windows Client if possible (because it is a common interface)

• If the wireless client for windows is enabled then it should automatically detect available wireless networks that are in range.
