VERMILLION — Brock Schardincame to the University of SouthDakota as a biology major. He gradu-ated from USD last December with anM.A. in Spanish Education. Why thedrastic change from the labs to a for-eign language?

The 2012 Fulbright Scholar, whocompleted his B.A. in Spanish in May2010 at USD (he ended up with aminor in biology), is currently teach-ing in the Aldine Independent SchoolDistrict in Houston, Texas where healso did his student-teaching in hisfinal semester at USD. Schardin ad-mits that his love of Spanish waspure happenstance and that, as afreshman, he was merely taking acourse to fulfill his humanities re-quirement for graduation.

“Interestingly, the course wastaught by a native Uruguayan whowas teaching at USD on a Fulbrightgrant herself,” said Schardin, whocalls Marion home. “After takingSpanish 101, I decided I enjoyed itand decided to take 102 the followingsemester, which is where I met my fu-ture mentor and adviser, TeresaPiper, who taught the course.”

Following two more semesters ofSpanish, Schardin convinced his par-ents to let him study abroad, whichis what he did the summer after hissophomore year in Sevilla, Spain.While in Sevilla, Schardin fell in lovewith both the language and the cul-ture. That’s when he knew it wastime to make a change to his careerpath. It’s a process, he believes,that’s already paid off – even withoutthe Fulbright grant.

“While at USD, I was active in myrole as president of the Spanish Clubfor three years,” said Schardin, theson of Brad and Vicki Schardin, alsoof Marion. “Through the SpanishClub, I participated in Jolley Elemen-tary School’s Beyond School Adven-tures afterschool program, presentedtwo bilingual plays and hosted manycultural activities each year.”

Outside of his involvement inSpanish Club, Schardin is very activeon the USD campus, particularlyservice-learning and community

service. In graduate school, he was aleader on Alternative Week of Off-campus Learning (AWOL) trips toMemphis, Tenn. and the Crow CreekIndian Reservation in central SouthDakota. Other organizations he hasbeen involved with at USD includeAdopt-a-Grandparent, Big Pal/LittlePal, Program Council, TOMS CampusClub and he served as a communityadvisor in Norton Hall. Additionally,he worked at the Vucurevich Chil-dren’s Center for three years andtaught supplemental instruction forboth Spanish 101 and 102 for twoyears.

His parents are Black Hills StateUniversity alumni but he and his sib-lings have strong ties to USD.Schardin’s older sister, Andrea Fly-ger, received both her bachelor’s de-gree and a master’s degree from theUniversity of South Dakota, and theiryounger sister, Cara, is completingher sophomore year at USD.

Sponsored by the United StatesDepartment of State, the FulbrightProgram was established in 1946 toincrease a mutual understanding be-tween people of the United Statesand other countries, through the ex-change of persons, knowledge andskills. The Fulbright Program alsoprovides funding for students, schol-ars and professionals to undertakegraduate study, advanced research,university teaching and teaching inelementary, and secondary schools.Schardin is the recipient of an Eng-lish Teaching Assistantship for theregion of Madrid, Spain. The experi-ence will immerse Schardin in theSpanish language and culture moredeeply but, at the same time, he willbe instructing in English. He is USD’s14th Fulbright recipient since 1998.

“One of the main goals of the Ful-bright program is to increase mutual,multicultural awareness,” he ex-plained, “and this will be a great op-portunity for me to grow in myknowledge and understanding of theSpanish culture and language as wellas to be a positive spokesperson formy country.”

A Farm Safety Day Camp willbe held at the Yankton County 4-H Building, 709 Whiting Dr., onWednesday, May 30. Activitiesrun from 12:30-4 p.m.

Nine different communitybusinesses and organizations willbe on hand to promote safetyand awareness to participants ofthis day camp. Topics to be cov-

ered range from animal to lawn-mower to machinery and grainsafety. The cost to attend is free,and Avera will donate a First Aidkit to the first 100 who sign up.
