Use Common SenseSafety begins by using your head. Most accidents are caused by misuse, not equipment failure.
Don’t be Stupid! Horseplay and tools don’t belong together!
Power DrillsSafe Drill Use• Always secure the piece you will be
drilling. A loose piece WILL spin and hit you
• Avoid loose clothing/long hair• Make sure the drill bit is secure. A
loose bit will not drill a hole• Let the drill do the work. Do not
press too hard. If the bit isn’t cutting, make sure the drill is spinning the proper direction.
• Drill pilot holes when necessary! A pilot hole is a smaller sized hole than one needed. This helps guide the drill bit (e.g. drilling a 1/16” hole to guide a 1/4” drill bit).
PVC Cutters
PVC Cutter Safety• Always close and lock the
cutter jaws when not in use• Never put your fingers
between the blades• Remember what your mother
told you (see comic)• Wear safety glasses when
using. PVC can splinter
Soldering IronSoldering Saftey• Never touch the tip of the
soldering iron• Do not use the soldering
iron near water• Work in a well ventilated
area and don’t breathe vapors
• Never leave a hot iron unattended
• Wear safety glasses and gloves
• Wash your hands after soldering. Solder usually contains lead.
Other Tools
General Safety for other tools• If it’s hot, don’t touch it• If it is electrical, keep it away
from water• If it can pinch or cut you, keep
your fingers out of it (e.g. vise)• Always use safety equipment,
even if you think you don’t need it (e.g. gloves, safety glasses)
• If it has fumes, don’t inhale them• Never use them as toys• And ALWAYS think before using
any tool
