Impact Factor

The impact factor (IF), is a measure of the citations to journals.

IF is calculated each year by Thomson Scientific for the journals which it indexes.

IF is published in Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The IF of a journal is calculated in a two-year period. It is the average of citations in a year to the papers in

a journal that were published in the two preceding years.

Impact Factor (Cont’d)

For example, the 2003 impact factor of a journal would be calculated as follows: A = the number of times articles published in 2001-2 were

cited in indexed journals during 2003

B = the number of "citable items" published in 2001-2

2003 impact factor = A/B

So a journal that is cited once, on average, for each article published, has an IF of 1.

In almost all resources you can set alert and/or RSS. Alerts are a component of Push Technology.

They send the required information automatically by e-mail.

Not all kinds of alerts are included in every resource.

“Science Direct“ has most types of alerts.

At least one type of alert is often found in a resource.

Alerts & RSS

Search alert: uses a pre-determined search according to a time table and retrieves the new results.

Topic/Subject alert: finds the relevant articles. TOC alert : sends the table of contents of new issues

of journals. volume/issue alert: notifies when a new issue of the

journal is available. Citation alert: sends alert whenever a favorite article

is cited.

RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader“ or "feed reader“ (eg: IE7 or Microsoft Outlook).

The RSS reader checks the subscribed feeds and shows the updates.

The user subscribes to a feed by clicking an RSS icon in a browser.

Podcasts and other multi media

Podcast: combination of the words iPod & broadcast.

It is similar to radio broadcasting, only via the web.

A podcast is a series of audio or video files which is distributed over the Internet.

It is actually a RSS file with information about the location and contents of a media file.

Podcasts can be subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added.
