Using ICT to Enhance Learning

The Role of ICT in learning

• We live in a constantly evolving digital world.

• ICT has an impact on nearly every aspect of our lives - from working to socialising, learning to playing.

• The digital age has transformed the way young people communicate, network, seek help, access information and learn.

• Young people too are now an online population and have access through a variety of ways including computers, TV and mobile phones.

ICT Within Education

• Motivates and purposefully engages children in their learning.

• Provides learners with relevant and contemporary experiences that allow them to successfully engage with technology and prepare them for life after school.

The purpose of the Curriculum is….

Curriculum for Excellence -Technologies

• Purpose : To gain the skills and confidence to embrace and use technologies now and in the future, at home, at work and in the wider community .

• I explore software and use what I learn to solve problems and present my ideas, thoughts, or information. TCH 0-03a

• enjoy exploring and using technologies to communicate with others within and beyond my place of learning. TCH 0-04a

• I enjoy taking photographs or recording sound and images to represent my experiences and the world around me. TCH 0-04b

Experiences and Outcomes –Early Level

(nursery – primary 1)

• As I extend and enhance my knowledge of features of various types of software, including those which help find, organise, manage and access information, I can apply what I learn in different situations. TCH 1 – 03a

• I can access, retrieve and use information from electronic sources to support, enrich or extend learning in different contexts.

• Throughout all my learning, I can use search facilities of electronic sources to access and retrieve information, recognising the importance this has in my place of learning, at home and in the workplace. TCH 2-03b

• I explore and experiment with the features and functions of computer technology and I can use what I learn to support and enhance my learning in different contexts. TCH 2-04a

• I can create, capture and manipulate sounds, text and images to communicate experiences, ideas and information in creative and engaging ways. TCH 2-04b

Significant Aspects of Learning (SALS)

TO PROVIDE LEARNERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO:

• understand how technological products work and how they affect people

• critical thinking through exploration and discovery within a range of learning contexts

How is ICT used to enhance learning in Blackwood Primary School and Nursery

Class?

• Education City – Literacy, Numeracy and French

• Internet - research

• Internet games e.g. cbeebies, top marks website, ictgameswebsite, Sumdog etc

• Microsoft Word – PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Publisher

• Animation – Scratch, Pivot Animator

• Programming

• GLOW

• Colour Magic

• Jolly Phonics

• Education City is an outside company which schools throughout Scotland can use if they wish.

• BPS&NC have been using the resource for over 2 years.

• Package includes English, Maths, French and Homework.

• It requires funding which the parent council have supported during the last 2 years.

• Current contract ends in November 2015 and the SMT are currently in negotiations with the company and Parent Council to look to extend this.

Why Education City?

• Set up internet explorer, just as you normally would at home, i.e. click on blue ‘e’ for internet explorer.

• In school the ‘RM learning alive’ page will come up, at home your own home page will come up e.g. perhaps google.

• Type in ‘Education City’ into the search engine, i.e. white box which in school is the ‘google’ search engine, at home it may be different (see next slide).

• Alternatively type in www.EducationCity.com at the address bar.

Children’s individual login and password should be recorded in the home school

planner for reference.
