Utilizing Science & Technology and Innovation for Development

Study the interaction of nanoparticles with proteins

Marriott Hotel- Amman, August 13th, 2015

Project Team

• Dr. Mayyas Al-Remawi Taif University/KSA

• Dr. Diya Alsafadi Royal Scientific Society/Jordan

Brief DescriptionThe development in the nanotechnology in the last decade has dramatically widened the prospect of using nanoparticles (NPs)

with unique properties.

- Due to size, nanoparticles more easily taken up

by the human body and can cross biological membranes, cells, tissues and organs more efficiently than larger particles.

- Less than 100nm enter cell, less than 40nm enter nucleus, less than 35nm pass Blood Brain Barrier.

Brief Description

Problem Disposal and environmental fate? Potential toxicity & Interactions with living

cells

Nanoparticle-Protein Corona

Nano- particles in physiological fluids interact initially with the proteins.

Formation of the corona is a dynamic, competitive process

Objectives

<Overall objective> Evaluate the biological hazard of nanoparticles by investigating its interaction with proteins.

<Specific objective> Assess the effect of silver and chitosan nanoparticles on serum proteins using spectroscopic techniques.

Scope of work/DurationEstimated Budget

Scope of work: Nanosafety and nanomedicine sciences.

Duration: 24 months

Estimated Budget : 210,000 JD

Methodology of Implementation

Nanoparticle synthesis Protein Corona

Functional impacts / toxicity

In vivo effects

Dispersion and characterisation

Impact

• The project will provide a significant contribution to the implementation of community environmental policy and legislation in the field of nanosafety and nanotoxicity.

• The outcomes and recommendations of the project will be sent to Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Health and JFDA.

Sustainability

Institutional sustainability Build a life communications plan between the academy

and industry. Prepare and market short courses related to project out

comes in collaboration with public and private sectors.

Policy level sustainabilityThrough proper channels we will create communications with the policy makers to approve legislations to encourage public and industrial sector to be aware for the using of NPs.
