experts in every digital area

What is user testing? •  A qualitative research method where user behaviour is observed.

•  Aim is to understand what people do with minimal interference from the

method itself.

•  Focus is on collecting data (evidence) directly (not indirectly via a survey or

analytics).

•  Can be formative (informs design decision) or summative (evaluates the

finished product).

“Supposing is good, but finding out is better.”

User testing benefits:

•  Less risk

•  Inform decision-making

•  Drives innovation

•  Recognise latent user issues

•  Exposure to real users

Aren’t you supposed to be an expert?

•  Designers are not your users.

•  Every business needs to understand the goals, motivations and behaviour

of its users.

•  Is my guess correct?

User Testing works

•  A 28% faster average completion time for tasks and an overall 37% reduction

in the number of usability problems (Tan et al, 2001)

•  Reduced task time and increased user satisfaction (Bailey and Wolfson, (2005);

LeDoux, L.C., Connor, E. and Tullis, T.S. (2005))

Larry Tesler

“Usability testing should always be done

before a designer finalizes unproven or

controversial interface elements.”
