VAADAC Positions The Board is continuing to take
nominations for positions on the Board
of Directors. Deadline for notifying the
Board is February, 28, 2009. Interested
persons, please contact VAADAC
President, Jennifer Johnson at
jjohnson@rhcc.com
This promises to be an exciting year.
Letter From Your
President
Our organization has reached a
milestone in its growth, so much so
that it outgrew its name (i.e. the
Virginia Association of Alcoholism
and Drug Abuse Counselors). Our new
name, the Virginia Association of
Addiction Professionals (VAAP) allows
us to explicitly welcome other addiction
professionals into our membership –
recovery coaches, prevention specialists,
physician assistants, social workers,
interventionists, medical doctors,
psychologists, psychiatrists, LPC’s,
LMFT’s and psychiatric nurse
practitioners. It also allows us to keep
up with the changes in our field.
As you know, NAADAC changed its
name a while ago to “NAADAC, The
Association for Addiction
Professionals”. Since that time, some
NAADAC state affiliates have changed
their names to reflect a realization of the
need to extend the arms of membership
beyond addiction counselors to all
addiction professionals.
I am sure that some are concerned that
what VAADAC represents may be left
behind. Let me assure you that as
this board goes forward over the next
year, we will do so mindful of
VAADAC’s values, the best of
VAADAC’s traditions, lessons we
have learned from VAADAC
(wisdom), and a commitment to
service to our members. Values,
traditions, wisdom, and service will
be the four cornerstones of our
foundation as Virginia Association of
Addiction Professionals. This year the
board also suggested Bylaws updates
which reflect further explication of:
board duties, the nominations and
elections process, student membership
and other levels of membership, and
certification/educational committee.
As the year progresses, you will begin to
see our new name incorporated into the
board’s work. You will see it on e-mail
and in the name of our newsletter. At
trainings, you will begin to note the new
name on our display.
As our membership increases, I hope
that you will join with me in welcoming
new members from different branches of
our field of addiction professionals —
recovery coaches, preventionists, LPC’s,
psychiatrists, interventionists, LMFT’s,
psychologists, social workers, psychiatric
nurse practitioners, physicians assistants,
and nurses—as they join the Virginia
Association of Addiction Professionals.

Meet Your NAADAC Mid-Atlantic Regional
Vice President
RON PRITCHARD, CSAC, CAS is
your “RVP”. He is also on the
NAADAC Veterans Task force.
This man has worked in the addictions
field for too many years to count in
base ten (1, 2, 3…) and done so much
that it is difficult to summarize his
work history adequately without using
shorthand or getting out a long scroll to
write on. I can try to give you a sense
of the spirit of his addictions work.
He recently retired as Head of
Addiction Medicine Services at
Portsmouth Naval Hospital and is
currently the Owner/Program Manager
of Addiction Program Consultants
(APC). He is the co-developer/founder
of Assist South Hampton Roads (1990’s
leader in tobacco cessation coalitions).
Past accomplishments include chairing
non-profit organizations that have
become familiar to us-- three-time
Virginia Summer Institute of Addiction
Studies (VSIAS) chair, past Virginia
Association of Alcohol and Drug
Addiction Counselors (VAADAC)
chair, and past Virginia Recovers, Inc.
(VRI) chair. He has also founded or
Co-founded a number of 501.c.3
(non-profit) organizations with a focus
on enhancing the status and conditions
of individuals suffering from addiction
and related negative consequences.
He is a current Board member of
Virginia Governor’s Committee for
Substance Abuse.
And then there are his awards.
They make up a pretty long list
too - Recipient of 2002 Ginger
Acey Counselor of the Year Award-
VADAP; 2004 Counselor of the Year
Award-VAADAC; 2003 Outstanding
Service Award-VAADAC; and 2011
Meritorious Civilian Service Award-
U.S. Navy.
What about the people that he has
helped? It’s hard to say how many
people he has counseled in his career as
an addiction professional, probably too
many for any of us to count without
falling into a deep sleep and snoring
pretty loudly. He will be the first one to
tell you that he has gained more from
His personal efforts than anyone. You
get a sense of serenity and spirituality
from him as he talks about it.
For Ron Pritchard, addictions work is
both his vocation and avocation. In the
last five years, he has been expanding
his work to include more policy making
as he has grown to understand the
positive and extensive impact of
effective policies.
Every state needs someone with the
energy, compassion, passion, skills,
knowledge, wisdom, and foresight that
Ron Pritchard brings to the addictions
field. Virginia is lucky to have him as a
board member and grateful to have him
as our RVP.
And exactly what does all of this have to
do with his role as your RVP? He’s
been there, done that, and is still doing
this & that---now for you. He is
representing your needs to NAADAC.
If you have any NAADAC issues or
suggestions for our RVP, please send
them to ronpritchard@verizon.net .
