Creation of Verified Accounts
• Started verifying in June 2009
• Increasing number of false Twitter accounts
• Reduce celebrity impersonator and identity theft
• Twitter wanted to create authenticity for its users
Kanye West vs. Impersonators
• We all know Kanye West to be an outspoken person– Rants on his personal blog about fake twitter
accounts– Personally calls out the creators of Twitter for not
paying more attention to user accounts– This is only an excerpt of what he wrote on his
blog
Tony La Russa Scandal
• St. Louis Cardinals manager sues Twitter• Says it caused emotional distress• False account was created using his name– Joking about a drunk driving incident and the
death of two of his players
La Russa Scandal Outcome
• Brought needed attention to imposter accounts
• Only 4 people where following his false Tweets
• Twitter agreed to pay legal fees and make a donation to La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation
What it means?
• Verify and confirm that the Twitter account belongs to the person they say they are
• Twitter endorses the account• Brings authentication to peoples accounts• Does not mean that every account that is not
verified is false
Who Gets a Verified Account?
• Verified accounts where created for celebrities, athletes, public personalities and famous people– Businesses are not being verified yet
• Must apply to get the verified badge • Only testing this feature, more people may
get it in the future
What a Verified Account Looks Like
• Verified account badge is present in top right of profile– If it appears anywhere else it is not verified
• In a search the badge will also appear next to the users name
• The badge will always be in the same color and font
• Must have the badge and then the words “verified account”
• The badge can only be given by Twitter
Verified vs. Unverified Accounts
Verified vs. Unverified Accounts
If you are being impersonated
• Asked to contact Twitter about the account– Give username of the impersonator– Your information (Name and phone number) and
Twitter account• Submit your ticket and get ticket tracking
information• Account user will be contacted– They will shut down the account and disabled
• Most cases no legal action will be taken– Some cases, like La Russa, will file a law suit
How to get a verified account?• Anyone can apply for
a verified account, but not guaranteed certification
• Could take months to get a notice back– Costs Twitter money
and takes a long time• Still testing this
feature
