Naturally Occurring Pattern

These are four images that I was considering to use at the first week. These are images of pigeon wings, peacock feathers, soil cracks due to changing weather and amethyst rock stone.

Pigeon Wings

I chose this one because I think this wing consists of unique individual feathers with interesting shape. I also think that this shape could be applicable as we are asked to find a pattern for our lantern, therefore the shape should better be easy to make.

Balance

In this analytical drawing, I tried to search the end point of each branches and make it somewhat spiral to match it with the original image.

Symmetry

To make symmetry analytical drawing, I made one basic shape that will be repeated a few times and the result pretty much matches the original shape. Therefore it could be seen that the image has a pattern in regards symmetrical shape.

Movement

For movement analytical drawing, the principal is pretty much the same with the symmetry one, however, the basic shape is different. Basic shape used in movement is more complicated since the the other one is just a joint lines.

There is a recipe to make this analytical drawing;1. Make the base element shaped like a leaf2. Copy the base element in a row3. Scale the row, it goes bigger as it goes further from the centre4. Rotate row as demand

Paper Model

These are the first paper models made based on the movement analytical drawing. This was made on tutorial and there are two of them. The right one is a flat and image-oriented whilst the left one has already innovated with mirroring and scaling techniques, also I made the surface uneven as it goes higher whenever it goes further from the centre.

Final Model

This is how a layer I re-make looks like. This is bigger than the previous one, but basically it uses the same principal.

Final Model

When all six layers were stacked, the shape became a bit different from what was expected. This is partly because I did not glue them together therefore it won't stay in the proper place. The reason that I done so is because I want to make the layers flexible to move and create another shapes other than just stacking them consecutively.

Stacking

This was my random stacking of the layers, I made them crossed to each other every layer and tried to give light from below. However, the shadow does not really show the pattern as I first expected it would be.

Rhino Base Graph

This is the base graph when it comes to rhino. Similar recipe is used in order to get this graph.Recipe:1. Make a middle line2. Draw a curve from the top to the bottom of the line3. Mirror the curve then join them4. Divide the first line into 55. Copy and scale the 2-curves into 0.86. Move into the 4th point7. Repeat 6 times (or more)

Rhino 3D

These are few steps to make the rhino. I mostly used flow and extrude command in order to get this pattern.

Free Form Pattern

Here I'm trying to make a 3D form in unusual pattern by making all the extrusion sliced with each other, one way to do that is by rotating them 3D, then cut the part that sliced.

Plasticine

Images above show the plasticine made by my partner at tutorial, showing I way to held the lantern in hand.It was supposed to wrap all arm therefore it could be more stable. However, with the right material and framework, it might not have to wrap the entire arm.

Plasticine

This is where the plasticine model has the same height as the paper model, even though it has no detail in it. This could also be another way of holding the lantern. However, it would not be very sufficient due to its shape which not supports light.

Lighting

For my lantern and based on the lecture on week 3, I am thinking of using either filtered, diffused or layered light, or else I might do a mixture of two or more lighting techniques. Images above show some examples of a filtered light and it exposes the focus to the shapes of the patterns.

Image above is an example of how a diffused light looks like, because the surrounding or the lamp's surface distributes the light unevenly.

Lighting

This supposed to be an example of layered lighting, but it has a kind of mixture between layered and diffused lighting as well. This is an inspirational example for me personally because I also want to try using mixture of lighting techniques.
