What are Sketchnotes?

“Sketchnotes are rich visual notes created from

a mix of handwriting, drawings, hand-drawn

typography, shapes, and visual elements like

arrows, boxes, and lines.” The Sketchnote Handbook: The Illustrated Guide, Mike Rohde.

Sketchnotes can make reading ACTIVE

What does research say about sketchnotes?

The power of sketchnotesresides in their ability to keep readers ACTIVELY involved in the reading process and to promote thinking about their thinking (metacognition) (click on picture for video)

linkDual Coding Theory (Allan Paivio, University of Ontario, 1971) suggests the idea that forming mental images aids in learning- dual in imagining and verbalizing.

Supported by AL CCRS: ELA Reading Anchor Standard 7“Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively as well as in words.”AND...AL CCRS: ELA Speaking and Listening Standard 5“Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.”

Is Sketchnoting the same thing as doodling?

Both doodling and sketchnoting can be used as a tool to increase focus, but sketchnoting is a little bit more…

Sketchnoting = creating visual evidence that supports and aligns with verbal and/or textual

evidence

But…. what if I can’t draw? YES! You can!

You just need to remember when you were a kid and drew without

restraint!Think IDEAS- NOT Art!!! Experiment,

play- the goal is to capture and convey ideas. Remember-

Let’s Put Sketchnotes To work

While I read aloud the article “Need to Remember Something?” sketch notes of the ideas that you think are important to remember.

Turn and share your sketchnotes with a partner and how you think sketching your thoughts shaped what you took away from the text. Think also about the how your discussions regarding your sketches impacted understanding and retention.
