that not only record and analysis Vitalsigns, but also be able to ID the patientand transmit all critical data seamlessly to hospitals.
Problem$17 billion of miss diagnostic costs are associated with preventable errors.
Miss Diagnostics: Reports indicated that as many as 44,000 to 98,000 people die in hospitals each year as the result of medical errors.
Medical errors are the eighth leading cause of death in this country—higher than motor vehicle accidents (43,458), breast cancer (42,297), or AIDS (16,516).
Nation approximately $37.6 billion each year; about $17 billion of those costs are associated with prevent-able errors. About half of the expenditures for prevent-able medical errors are for direct health care costs.
Miscommunication with the hospital. If the EMS does not accurately report to the hospital what treatment an accident victim has had, the patient may not receive the proper care - or may receive a double dose of treatment. Both are dangerous.

GE is working to develop a platform to connect today’s disparate health care IT systems, allowing physicians to share a patient’s medical records seamlessly with other health care providers.
Access to this information is critical so that physicians and patients can make informed choices about health care. It also helps to reduce unnecessary work and the chances of medical errors.

Interoperability, or allowing providers to share records and view them from anywhere, is a require-ment for facilities to receive some of the more than $17 billion in stimulus funding that the government is offering to encourage the adoption of electronic medi-cal records. Congress will likely penalize providers who aren’t doing so by 2014, cutting their Medicaid and Medicare payments, the Obama administration said.
Medical technology industries spent greater shares of research and development as a percent of sales in 2002 than did other U.S. industries: 11.4% for the Medical Devices industry and 12.9% for Drugs and Medicine, compared to 5.6% for Telecommunications, 4.1% for Auto, 3.9% for Electrical/Electronics, 3.5% for All Companies, and 3.1% for Aerospace/Defense.9

The responsibility of the Paramedic includes obtaining a comprehensive drug his-tory from the patient that includes name of drugs, strength, daily usage and dosage. The paramedic must take into consideration that many factors, in relation to the history given, can affect the type medication to be given. For example, some pa-tients may be taking several medications prescribed by several different doctors and some may lose track of what they have or have not taken.
A paramedic functions as the most extensively trained primary care provider in the pre-hospital setting. The paramedic is responsible for all aspects of care provided to the sick and injured. The paramedic provides both basic and advanced life support, including comprehensive patient as-sessment, invasive airway management, cardiac monitoring and administration of medications. The paramedic is frequently in a leadership role work-ing with a small team of lesser-trained
Paramedicprehospital care providers. The paramedic is responsible for verbal communication with the patient, other prehospital providers and hospital personnel, including physician medical directors. The paramedic completes extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided, and must understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding emergency medical service.
The term paramedic comes from para- (auxiliary) and medical, and means “related to medicine in an auxiliary capacity”.

Technology Fujitsu has developed a contact less palm vein pattern authentication technology that uses vascular patterns as personal identifi cation data. Vein recognition technology is secure because the authenti-cation data exists inside the body and is therefore very diffi cult to forge. It is also highly accurate — in testing using140,000 palm profi les of 70,000 individuals, it had a false acceptance rate of less than 0.00008% and a false rejection rate of 0.01%*.
Palm vein authentication works by comparing the pattern of veins in the palm (which appear as blue lines) of a person being authenticated with a pattern stored in a database. Vascular patterns are unique to each individual, according to Fujitsu research — evenidentical twins have different patterns. And since the vascular patterns exist inside the body, they cannot be stolen by means of photography, voice recording or fi ngerprints, thereby making this method of biometrics authentication more secure than others.

DITI, or digital infrared thermal imaging, is a noninvasive diag-nostic test that allows a health practitioner to see and measure changes in skin surface tempera-ture. An infrared scan-ning camera translates infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface and records them on a color monitor. This visual image graphically maps the body temperature
and is referred to as a thermogram. The spec-trum of colors indicates an increase or decrease in the amount of infrared radia-tion being emitted from the body surface. In healthy people, there is a symmet-rical skin pattern which is consistent and reproduc-ible for any individual.

Current EMT equipment is bulky and cumbersome
Reduction in the amount of gear and equipment for paramedics and EMTs will help in situations where there is immediate or high levels of danger
Hospital savings of millions of dollars due to the fact that there will be less error in the operation and procedure due to miss diagnostics.
The results of the unit will outweigh the cost of the unit substantially
When the opportunity
came to the initial design
of the device, there were
many factors that came to
mind; should the design
be simple, easy to use,
durable, held with one or
two hands, where the
buttons would be placed,
so on and so forth.
These next few pages
encompass the stratigic
thought process that lead
to the fi nal design
of product, interface,
iconography, system, and
user experience.
Ideations invovling a
system that transfers vital
signs of a emergency pa-
tient to hospitals upon ar-
rival. Doctors will have the
data inputed into a system
data base. Having the
medical records at hand
as the patient is delivered
to the hospital.
Increasing productivity
and lower the chance for
misdiagnostics can allow
for a more speedier and
effi cient way to perform
medical tasks without any
time lost.
Design ingenuity must
have forms of simplicity, an
interface and function that
paramedics can relate to.
Be able to function the

Vital signs are measures of various physiological statistics, often taken by health professionals, in order to assess the most basic body functions. Vital signs are an essential part of a case presentation. The act of taking vital signs normally entails recording Body temperature, Pulse rate (or heart rate), Blood pressure, and Respiratory rate.
Temperature can be recorded in order to establish a baseline for the individual’s normal temperature for the site and measuring conditions. The main reason for checking body temperature is to solicit any signs of systemic infection or infl ammation in thepresence of a fever.
Blood pressure (BP) is a force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, and is one of the principal vital signs. During each heartbeat, BP varies between a maximum (systolic) and a minimum (diastolic) pressure.
The pulse is the physical expansion of the artery. Its rate isusually measured either at the wrist or the ankle and is recorded as beats per minute.
Respiratory rate is the number of breaths a living being, such as a human, takes within a certain amount of time (frequently given in breaths per minute).
