What can I say, becoming a Viking was something that I never imagined I would be able to put on my resume!
I admit that when the idea of ‘Challenge Kevin’ was suggested I was very sceptical. My first two challenges; Zumba challenged by Nat Ellis and Viking Battle Training challenged by Laura Hancock have been experiences that I will never forget.
Perhaps the most eye opening aspect has been seening `our work’ from an entirely new perspective - in this instance a very large Welsh man hitting me with an axe! I have found being out of my comfort zone challenging and rewarding. I have realised afresh how skilled you are at creating great experiences for people.
So, who will throw down the gauntlet for the next issue of the Voice?
Send your challenges to challengekevin@vivacity-peterborough.com Speaking of the Vikings, I am looking forward to seeing many of you down at the Heritage Festival this weekend. It has been a lot of hard work for those involved and promises to be another vibrant and exciting event not to be missed on the Vivacity calendar!

Vivacity’s COMMITMENT
to safeguardingVivacity has reviewed it’s safeguarding policy and we would like to welcome you to the big relaunch! So here goes…
Safeguarding is the responsibility of every member of staff and volunteer at Vivacity. It means protecting people’s health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. We have a wide variety of roles in Vivacity, not all of which have direct contact with children or vulnerable adults, but you do not have to be working directly with those groups to have a responsibility for Safeguarding.
People in need of safeguarding are usually thought of as two distinct groups - children and vulnerable adults - however, people may experience harm, abuse or neglect from many sources and it may not always be immediately apparent that the person is vulnerable.
If you have any concerns about any customer or service user please raise those concerns with your Designated Safeguarding Officers, Laura Gammons and Toni King on 864 299.
Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone - no concern is too minor! You should see new posters appearing in your sites showing our contact details - these are for staff, volunteers and members of the public, so please ensure the posters are displayed prominently.
All front line staff are required to attend the Safeguarding Children training courses.
Dates are available throughout the year - if you haven’t already been on the course, please speak to your manager to get booked on.
We are also looking to provide further training throughout the year, so watch this space!
Please ensure you read the new policy - it contains vital information and contact details. It can be found in the Shared HR file on the X drive, but there will be copies available in each work place - just ask your manager.

COSHH stands for ‘Control of Substances Hazardous to Health’ and under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, employers need to either prevent or reduce their workers’ exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health.
The majority of organisations today use substances that could cause harm to employees, contractors and other people. These hazardous substances can come in many different forms so care should be taken when you are handling or exposed to any of the following:

Unsung
Superheroes ‘on wheels’When I was a little younger (cough, cough) my friends and I used to skate around the streets where we lived. No one showed us how to start, stop, or avoid knocking people over etc.
It was just great fun. Sure, a couple of times we had near misses, or crashed into things - walls/dogs/people/the pavement and occasionally there was a broken limb or two, but it didn’t kill us.
A couple of years ago I discovered it’s a skill that actually never leaves you. I rediscovered skating when my youngest child was invited to a skating party. The lovely team helped everyone to find their balance and to start to skate. She was then hooked, as was I, again!
As a parent I am eternally grateful that my daughter is learning and gaining confidence where stewards keep everyone safe, and make sure we all have a great time.
Every Saturday night at Werrington Leisure Centre and once a month on a Sunday at Bushfield a dedicated group of adults (who never lost the skating bug), run sessions and parties enabling people like my youngest to learn to skate safely and avoid the aforementioned hazards of my skating youth. So who are these people?
The Rollers team have over 314 years of experience between them, looking after everyone that attends, guiding them on how to and how not to behave when on skates, whether on the rink or off.
Darrell Read Head Steward says “We have a duty of care that we take very seriously, a disciplined rink helps to keep people safe and encourage all to feel they are being looked after by a great team of enthusiastic skaters.”
Rollers started at Werrington in Jan 2012 and several of the team have been in on the project from the start - these are Darrell - Head Steward, Mark Robinson - 1st deputy Head Steward, Jon Paul Lefevre (JP) - 2nd Deputy Head Steward, and Skate Stewards Kevin Burdock, Fabi Lines-Beard, and Charlotte Cross.
The team are great at talent spotting and asking people to apply to volunteer from the customers who attend the sessions. Since the start some volunteers have come and gone, but the current bunch of superheroes are: Skate Stewards David Fone, Zena Davidson, husband and wife team Holly & Gary Homden (Gary is also the main instructor), Colin Jones, Michelle Tilley. And last but not least Bradley Whybrow, DJ and Lewis Mote, Trainee DJ.
The main thing the team gets out of the volunteering experience with Rollers is seeing people gain skills and confidence and leave with huge smiles on their faces.
Volunteer today! If you want to help out the team are looking for a front desk assistant to check the skates of the customers to make sure they haven’t got stones or anything else stuck in them which would cause problems.
The role is on Saturdays 4.45 – 6.45pm at Werrington Leisure Centre. If you can help or know someone who can please call 01733 864 775 or email volunteering@ vivacity-peterborough.com.
As skate steward Kevin put it “..seeing non skaters improve and being over the moon with their progress” the second aspect that keeps the team coming back is the camaraderie. From the outside, the biggest thing for me about Rollers is that they genuinely care about each other and the sessions they run.
Lastly, skating is great exercise, which is easy to forget when you’re having fun.
This is a great opportunity to publicly thank the team. They turn up week in, week out and keep the enthusiasm going amongst themselves that helps to ignite the same buzz in new skaters. If you’ve never been - why not give it a go.

Volunteering
Peterborough and the
Great War It’s full steam ahead for the WWI project as volunteers are on track with the research.
A dedicated team of 14 volunteers are using the skills they have gained on the family history course to research the servicemen’s biographies and input the information onto a bespoke website.
The volunteers are undertaking a number of roles including research, copy writing, proof reading, updating the website as new information is uncovered and keeping people up-to-date via social media. This is no mean feat as there are 590 entries, 139 of which are complete and on the website with many more in progress. To date we have traced 24 descendants of the servicemen.
Well done to all the hard working dedicated volunteers working on this project.
The volunteers have completed 2,108 hours on the project in the last 13 months!
Nick Carr
Q1 What attracted you to the project?
I have done my own family history research on and off for a few years and had limited options for taking it further. I had done quite a bit on relatives in WWII but knew little about WWI and it sounded an interesting project to work on. Having been a senior manager in my recent career I was looking for an interesting role but without the need to supervise staff or get involved in management meetings.
Q2 What’s you role?
Researching the names in the books initially but my role has developed into being a second pair of eyes checking other researcher’s findings and also writing a short biography of the subjects from the facts found.
Q3 What do you get out of it?
I am learning more about a war that I was obviously aware of but had not studied in any detail. The stories we are uncovering range from less than 90 days served in the UK only to those who lay down their lives for their country and those wounded who went back into battle, sometimes more than once. It is nice to work as part of a small team who are all pulling in the same direction and being trusted to delve deeper by finding surviving relatives of our soldiers. I have learnt more about research that will help me revisit and improve my own family tree in due course.
Q1) What attracted you to the project?
I met the Project Officer, Beverley Jones back in 1995 when we studied our degrees in history and we’ve been friends ever since. When I had extra time on my hands after taking a voluntary redundancy package, I jumped at the chance of working on this project. Being a history nerd, it is such a great opportunity to work with such unique primary resources and to actually make use of my degree!
Q2) What is your role?
I started off doing some transcription of the books then moved on to researching the women who made up the WUTAC group and ran the rest room. I now help to manage the project website and promote the volunteers research via social media.
Q3) What do you get out of it?
I really enjoy volunteering. It is a great opportunity to meet and work with all kinds of lovely people whose paths I might not have otherwise crossed. I also like to think that I’m contributing to my local community and promoting Peterborough. I’ve gained a whole range of skills from research methods to dealing with archive materials. I’ve also contributed to knowledge of local history and built on my IT skills.
All of these are very transferable and valuable additions to my CV.
Racheal Richmond
Decendants of Private DreweryThe biographical information is being shared online, via social media and on a digital screen at Peterborough Railway Station. The information is being released in real time 100 years to the week that the servicemen passed through the station.
