TRANSCRIPT

Voicethread

“ It’s not a question of how well each process works, the questions is how well they work together.”

-Lloyd Dobens

IET presentation

What is Voicethread?

The word is mashup of ‘voice’ and ‘thread’.

voice = expression

thread = response to that expression

trustedadvisor.com/public/image/collaboration

Each new user who creates a presentation becomes a new voice and every user who leaves a comment becomes a new thread

in the discussion

Voicethread makes collaboration visual

The discussion centers around visual media

• Photos

• Videos

• Presentations

• Other documents

Many images and/ or combinations of different types of images can be added to create an album

Viewer comments are uploaded and posted

around each image in the album

Here’s a screenshot to show what I mean:

ParticipantComments

ParticipantComments

Other images in the album

• A text message • A sound clip• A doodle drawing• An uploaded file • And even as a phone

message!

Participants in the discussion may add a comment in the form of:

Voicethread is asynchronousMany participants can view and post comments at the same time or at different times

A word about content

• It is user generated

• It can be altered/edited by all viewers or by invited viewers only

• Comments can be removed by the person who generated the album

A Voicethread discussion can be public or private.

Other features:

You can also monitor edits to your presentation via an

RSS feed

You can export the entire presentation to your iPod

You can embed a snippet of code in a moodle or other site

Voicethread has a separate platform for educators and this account, with most of the Pro features, is free as an educator in a K-12 school.

Uses

There are obvious applications of this tool for educators who are interested in teaching the value of collaboration.

Value of use in a classroom?

Participation in a Voicethread is purposeful and provides a safe environment for self expression.

Adds an element of creativity to group discussion.

‘Vandalism’ is an issue on many social media sites.

Through Voicethread teachers provide an opportunity to talk about positive ways to contribute to social media sites that may have spill over effect in other online environments.

Students can see how the thinking about a topic develops as contributions are made by participants.

VoiceThread is flexible and simple enough to include students with a wide range of abilities and comfort levels with social media.

changes the roles of teacher and student

places students at the center of their own learning

helps learners, (and often times teachers), to come to a broader understanding of concepts and ideas

builds on previous knowledge

Collaborative learning

There are other more business oriented collaboration tools out there that might be better suited to that specific environment, Zoho and Google docs come to mind.

Voicethread tutorial

This presentation is not about how to use Voicethread, but if you are interested, the creators of Voicethread have posted a starter tutorial here and a VoiceThread user has posted another here.

I set up a sample public Voicethread at the address on the last slide.
