The Seventh annual conference of the Indian Association for Social Sciences and Health was organised by the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University at Varanasion from 5th to 7th March, 2010 and theme was “Health, Poverty and Human Development” . The Inaugural Session started at 10 a.m. on 5th March The session was presided over by Prof. T.M. Mahapatra, Director, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. After the welcome address by Prof. A.K. Pandey, Coordinator, Centre for Study of social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Prof. K.E. Vaidyanathan, President, Indian Association for Social Sciences and Health, introduced the theme of the seminar. Chief Guest Prof. JMS Verma from Lucknow University, in his in-augural address threw light on the evolution of the concept of human development. While discussing health as an issue, he emphasized the importance of strengthening the preventive system rather than the curative only. The Guest of Honour, Prof. T.M. Mahapatra, Director, IMS, BHU, in his presidential address talked about life-style generated diseases, however, he emphasized that in Indian context even these diseases like HIV/ AIDS have significant linkages with poverty.

Three symposia and nine technical sessions are arranged. Symposium III on the theme, ‘Food Security, Nutrition, Women and Children’ was chaired by Dr. Nesim Tumkaya, UNFPA. Four brilliant presentations were made by Prof. Kumudu Wije-wardena, Dr. Sheel Sharma, Prof. M.H. Suryanarayana and Dr. Arni Srinivasa Rao. Prof. Kumudu explained the nutritional status of fewer than five children in Sri Lanka. Dr. Nesim Tumkaya was felicitated by IASSH for his outstanding contribu-tion to Population activities in India. The conference concluded with the Valedic-tory session. After welcoming the Chief Guest Prof. C.D. Singh and other dignitar-ies, feedback was taken from the participants where they greatly appreciated the conference and congratulated the organizers.

Awards were declared for the young researcher’s presentations as well as for the best poster award.

Indian Association for Social Sciences and Health (IASSH) felicitated Dr. Nesim Tumkaya for his contribution to Social Sciences research, Population and Human Development programs through UNFPA. IASSH is much indebted to Dr. Nesim Tumkaya for his encouragement in enhancing IASSH activities through national seminars. Dr. Tumkaya participated in the seventh IASSH conference. He chaired Symposia-III and gave valuable comments and suggestions. He explained that “the social sciences research should be carefully carried out on the basis of available data and selection of suitable methodology viz: Analytical or descriptive”. His valuable comments are very well taken by all young scholars. Let us know about Dr. Nesim Tumkaya : Dr. Tumkaya is a Fulbright Scholar for advanced study at the University of Pennsylvania (USA) where he obtained a Ph. D degree in Demography. Dr. Nesim Tumkaya has more than 33 years of professional experience, including university teaching and advisory services to governments under the auspices of the United Nations. Prior to taking up his current assignment in New Delhi as the UNFPA Representative for India (and Country Director for Bhutan) in June 2007, Mr. Tum-kaya was the Deputy Director, Division for Arab States, Europe and Central Asia at UNFPA Headquarters in New York. Dr. Tumkaya worked as UNFPA Representative in several countries such as Sudan, Paki-stan, Indonesia and Uzbekistan while he covered also Kazakstan, Kyrgztan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Prior to joining UNFPA, Mr. Tumkaya worked as Chief Technical Adviser for the United Nations Depart-ment of Technical Cooperation For Development (UN-DTCD), in the capacity of Professor of Demogra-phy at the University of Swaziland (Kingdom of Swaziland) and University of Botswana, and as Senior Adviser to the Central Statistical office, Government of Botswana. Before joining the UN, Dr. Tumkaya worked as Assistant Professor at the Pahlavi University in Iran.
