Hi Folks!
As my second one-year term comes to a close, this is the last column I will write as President of Temple Judea. I enjoyed working with the 27 members of our Board and I thank them for their help.
It was a special time working so closely with our esteemed Rabbi and Sima. Thank you both for your guidance.
In my two years, we managed to keep dues steady at $350 per person. We worked to make Bingo a fund-raiser for our Temple. Our membership is holding steady.
However, we need to do much more to keep Temple Judea viable. I am working on soliciting more donations and looking into the possibility of creative long-term financing. The building is worth approximately $3,800,000; we own our land and building free and clear.
Good luck to the incoming management team. Let's support them as you supported me.
Respectfully submitted,
Morty Braver, President
Years ago I heard a story about the remarkable Ben Hecht, creator of the screwball comedy, acrobat, violinist, writer extraordinaire and passionate defender of Jews in WWII and Israel. When the State of Israel was founded, Hecht found himself in the
office of a Jewish mogul raising money for Israel. The mogul waved him away. "Listen Hecht," he insisted in the fashion of some early Hollywood figures, "I don’t consider myself Jewish." Hecht answered immediately. "Fair enough. Here's the deal. You pick up the phone and call ten non-Jewish friends and ask them, 'Am I Jewish?' If just one of them says no, I'll leave your office." The mogul wrote a check. Sadly, in Jewish history it has often been the non-Jewish world that has reminded the Jew of his own identity. Far more beautiful is to affirm who we are without the approval or censure of others. When one is heir to such a rich, long and world-shaping tradition, why hide? Better than being reminded by the world is to remind ourselves. [adapted from R’ Wolpe]
B'vrachot, blessings,
Rabbi Dennis Linson
HAPPY CHANUKAH! - CHAG URIM SAMEACH!
THOUGHTS FROM OUR RABBI
MOVING ON Jewish Family Service holds a Bereavement group led by Cally Clein at Temple Judea on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. The group, for those who have recently lost a loved one, provides the opportunity to share experiences, hear how others deal with grief, receive support and discover ways to cope with feelings of sadness and loss. There’s no fee to attend, but pre-registration is required. To register or for info, call Cally Clein (949) 435-3460
Is it a Chanukiah or a Menorah? by Lorie Clayton We use these two words interchangeably. There’s a difference: • The Menorah is an ancient symbol of our Jewish Faith as depicted at Temple Judea on either side of our Ark doors. It has 7 branches. • The Chanukiah is the most recognized symbol of Chanukah. It has 9 branches – 1 for each night of the holiday and the Shamash (attendant candle). Whether you call it a Menorah or a Chanukiah, may the lights of the holiday warm your spirits and bring you and those you love and care about - warmth and joy.
HELP BUILD OUR FUTURE An easy way is to make a charitable gift through your will. Simply use these or similar words in drafting your will: “I give and bequeath unto Temple Judea, a nonprofit corporation that is recognized as exempt from tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, ID# 95-2503535 the sum of $____ to be used for general purposes.” If you don’t wish to specify an amount, you may wish to state the amount as a percentage of your estate. Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime and you’re able to modify your bequest should circumstances change. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you or your advisors.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT Our 4th film presentation of our Sunday Matinee Movie Series will be on Dec. 15th at 2:00 PM. The film will be “NICKY’S FAMILY.” To the best of my knowledge, this will be the first showing of “Nicky’s Family” in Orange County. Please see a very brief synopsis of this movie below. But the story of “Nicky’s Family” cannot by defined in a “brief synopsis.” The film must be seen to be described!
If you did not purchase the Series ticket of $10 - not to worry. Admission is $3, payable at the door. I suggest you mark your calendar for Sunday, Dec. 15th at 2:00 PM, for our 4th feature in our Series. Refreshments will be served (as they are at each of our movie events). I urge you to attend and to bring a friend. Everyone is Welcome!
The sad news is that our Matinee Movie Series will end with our final feature on Dec. 15th. However, the good news is that the Series was met with such strong attendance and rave reviews that your Social Committee agreed to inaugurate another Movie Series in the near future. So watch for the “COMING SOON” publicity.
Meanwhile, your Social Committee invites you to our annual “Hanukah Happening,” on Wednesday, Dec. 4th, for the lighting of the eighth candle. This event begins at 3:00 PM with a performance depicting the story of Chanukah entitled, “Judah Maccabee Comes to Temple Judea.” an original script written by our own Celia Marsh. Performing in this presentation will be Neal Linson, with narration by Bob Meyers. After the performance we will enjoy a light dairy supper, catered by Panache. The cost is $18 per person; $5 per child under age 12. Our Hebrew School Students are FREE. We will culminate the “Hanukah Happening” with the lighting of the 8th candle on our huge outdoor menorah.
So there’s lots’ going on at Temple Judea. We hope you will support and participate in our events. They are all planned with YOU in mind. Serving you with pleasure, Jean Janowsky, Chairperson

6 Temple Judea December 2013
Greetings: Our speaker for November was Professor Mathias Lehmann, University of California, Irvine. Prof. Lehmann spoke on “Jews & Muslims, Early Encounters. It was a lively talk enjoyed by all as he told about the start of Islam, its spread and first encounters with Jews, use of Judaism’s writings to form the Koran and early negative interactions between the two religions.
Al Levy, our program chair, has a great speaker for December. Assistant to the Dean for Communica-tions & External Relations, Esssraa Nawar, at Chapman Univer-sity’s Leatherby Library. She will speak on the subject of “Feeling Welcome in the U.S.” She is from Egypt; earned her bachelor’s degree in commerce from Alexandria University and an MBA from American Management & Business Administra-tion Institute, Cambridge, MA. She served in the Alexandria Library (Bibliotheca Alexandria) for four years working in ac-quisitions. She lives in Orange County with her husband and family. She’s an active parent at Orange Crescent Islamic

RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE KISLEV/TEVET 5774 DECEMBER 2013
There is one distinction we observe this year with the Holiday of Chanukah, namely it falls on the darkest
phase of the moon in the darkest season of the year, the 25th day of Kislev. A special Calendar Council decided when a leap year should occur, and whether the months of Cheshvan and Kislev should have 29 or
30 days. The Sanhedrin Calendar Council was concerned with synchronizing the two calendars for the sim-
ple reason that, the Jewish calendar was a lunar calendar with about 354 days in its year and the Civil cal-endar was a solar calendar with approximately 365 days, producing an 11-day discrepancy.
The Sanhedrin’s Calendar Council wanted to synchronize the two calendars for the simple reason that the
Jewish Holy Days were based on the solar cycle and had to be celebrated at their “appointed times” as spec-ified in the Bible. For example, Passover had to be observed in the spring. However, the annual 11-day dis-
crepancy between the Hebrew and Civil calendar was finally reconciled. It should be noted that up until the
year 359, the arrival of the New Moon was announced by the Sanhedrin each month, based on testimony of two eyewitnesses who appeared before the Sanhedrin and were questioned about the crescent of the New
Moon. If satisfied, the Sanhedrin would send torch signals from mountaintop to mountaintop.
We invite you to the very attractive programs prepared for your enjoyment. Furthermore, the Religious Committee welcomes you to our Monday and Thursday Minyan Services and our Shabbat Services. Try our
new programs, you will like them! Last but not least, we wish each and every one a Happy and Healthy year
2014.
