Volume MMXIII lssue 2 — October 2013
One of my favorite family outings is to go to a farm, get lost in a corn maze, pick a pumpkin from the field, and
then try to “sling” a small gourd into a crate—harder than it looks. Some of our best family photos have come
from these outings and still stand on the mantel. The orange pumpkins sitting among the green vines and kids
nestled with personally picked pumpkins in the wheel barrow, such a beautiful image. Of course the kids are a
bit big for that now, but we all still delight in roaming the corn maze, nowhere in particular we are going with
dad telling us we made a wrong turn (let’s make another wrong turn, the boys and I conspire with a grin). This
time at the farm is the harbinger of days ahead, time to focus on home and hearth after fun in the sun. I hope
you are finding Fernwood a welcoming community where you will spend some time with us. Here are some
highlights.
I hope you have been to your curriculum night(s) and are excited for what lies ahead for your child(ren). We
were thrilled with the amazing turnout for the Watch DOGS meeting (go dads!!!) and for our first PTSA meet-
ing. We hope to see you all again! We are just finishing our first fundraising effort for this year and I hope you
are looking forward to our 17 Oct. walk-a-thon. Our fantastic fundraising team, Tamara, Mary and Cheri, has
been working diligently—thank you! I just hope the Orange Ruler isn’t mistaken for the great pumpkin! Look-
ing ahead, we also have conference week coming. This is a not to be missed opportunity to meet one on one
with your child(ren)’s teacher(s) and put in place a customized plan for success this year. We have one more
fundraising opportunity—boxtops. Please turn in neatly trimmed, non-expired boxtops by 11 Oct. We’ve got
another chance to help you get the year off to a good start at our PTSA meeting Tuesday 8 Oct. 7pm. We will
have a guest speaker come talk about how we can help our kids with their homework effectively. I know I can
use a few tips! Of course we’ve got some fun cooking up, too. Look for our second spaghetti feed dinner, a
great time to have dinner and hang out with Fernwood friends.
So even with all this activity, I hope you still have time to get out to a pumpkin patch or other fun family event. I
promise we always look carefully before pulling the trigger on the pumpkin cannon (you should try it, you know
you want to!). And we mind Linus’ advice carefully, always looking for the most sincere pumpkin patch. May-
be that patch is actually right here. . . I saw a squash in the planting bed near the library. I think together we
can make Fernwood an extension of our homes. I look forward to visiting with you there!

Humans communicate on many levels: spoken language, tone, body language, style and personality. The fact that we have complex cul-tural identities and a host of differing past experiences increase the probability of cross-cultural miscommunications. This workshop pre-sents major cross-cultural communication theories, ways that cultural values, power, privilege and differences affect the way we communi-cate, tools for questioning assumptions, and ways to improve cross-cultural communication skills.

We are in need of library volunteers! No experience necessary. We desperately need at least one volunteer for all of the highlighted classes. All of the classes that are underlined are K/1st grade classes that could use one more volunteer. Library time is a fun way to help out and get to know many of the
kids. If you are able to fill any of these times, please contact Gini Scott, ginilnscott@hotmail.com. Thanks!

appreciate anything you can do to give them the luxury of having a costume for trick or treating

All for Books Coin Drive
Collection Day Wednesday, November 6th
Got some loose coins lying around? Bring them in and help us raise money for All for Books. For every dollar we raise, Scholastic will donate a book to children in need. The money we raise will go towards purchasing Just Right books for each classroom.
Coins will be collected in front of the office on Wednesday, November 6th before school starts. Collection bags and more information will be sent home at the end of October.
Many thanks to Danyel Joyner for helping us organize and purchase books with the proceeds from last year’s coin drive. She provided us with a summary of what was purchased: Well over 100 books were purchased with the gift money from last year's Book Fair. Our key objective was getting books with a variety of reading levels for our leveled book tubs. We were able to add 118 books into our leveled book sets. Many of the books connected to skills being taught in many grades- Non-fiction titles such as "All About Books", "Spiders, Spiders Everywhere" and "I Like Me" are just a few. We also added many fiction titles to our leveled collection: "The Rat and The Tiger", "A Hat for Minerva Louise", and "That's What Friends are For."
We also invited classroom teachers to request titles needed for their leveled libraries and instructional themes. One grade level added more Reader's Theater books. Another grade level purchased a set of books addressing character traits like kindness and compassion (4 book sets total). An upper grade level wanted a historical chapter book for their in class read aloud (4 copies of the book were purchased.) The money went far and will impact a large range of readers in grades K-6. A huge thank you from the Fernwood staff!

The Spider and the Web
Ever watched a spider catch its prey? How do they know the difference between food and debris blown into the web? Try this and see if you can figure it out.
Directions:
1. Explore your garden or nearby park until you find a web with a spider in it.
2. Hold the tuning fork by the handle and tap it against the wood block. The fork should hum.
3. Place one prong of the fork against a strand of the web. What does the spider do?
So did you get any stray webs on your hands, or face? Would you like to inspect the web closely? Try this.
Materials:
Can of clear spray lacquer (available in hardware stores)
8-inch square sheet of stiff black paper
Directions:
1. Look around your yard or nearby park for a spider web. Touch the center of the web lightly with a leaf to be sure that the weaver is no longer around. Find a web with no spider.
2. Spray the web with lacquer several times, allowing it to dry between applications.
3. Spray the web once again. While the web is still wet, hold the black paper up against it and lift the web onto the paper. Gently pull away any support strands.
4. Spray the web and paper with one more layer of lacquer and allow it to dry.
5. Follow the same procedure with other webs. Look for different sizes and shapes.
For more science information and ideas see the science fair website: www.schoolsciencefair.blogspot.com. The science fair will be this spring. Anyone interested in helping please contact Amy Oliver or Kristin Lindamood via email (amyroliver@gmail.com, kristinlynn@msn.com). No science experience necessary; curiosity and a sense of adventure are preferred.
Materials:
An occupied garden spiderweb
Tuning fork (or fork with long tines)
Small block of wood
