O`ahu Bulky Item CollectionAppointment Service

Current System

City provides regularly-scheduled monthly curbside bulky item collection service to single family and some multi-unit dwelling units.

O`ahu Bulky Item Collection Sector Map

• O`ahu is divided into “bulky” sectors, each of which is collected over a predetermined 3-4 day period every month.

• City crews “canvass” every sector looking for bulky waste to collect.

What’s The Problem?

Delayed & Uncertain Collection• 3-4 day collection period• Missed streets

Illegal Dumping• Consistent scheduling invites abuse

Inefficiency• Excess fuel consumption• Wear and tear on equipment and City

streets• Collecting non-program waste

Too Much Rubbish! • ~80% increase in bulky tonnage from

Adjustments to Collection Availability

In the Honolulu Pilot, each sector was collected once per month

As sectors became fully booked, residents would schedule for the following month

In areas that booked quickly, residents held onto bulky items for longer than one month

By rotating the schedule, appointments are available multiple times per month

This reduces the wait time between available appointments while still limiting residents to one collection per calendar month
