Steps that the U.K. has taken

• The Sex Discrimination Act 2002 – allows political parties to reduce inequality in elected officials

• Government led a national campaign to encourage women to run for office– goal is to have women in 45-50 % of public offices by 2005

• Women make up about 19.7% of MPs– UK ranked 14th in the EU and 45th out of 184 countries listed by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in terms of the percentage of women holding office in the lower or single house of the national Parliamentary body

• Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 and the Equal Pay Act of 1970– Prevent discrimination in:

– In October 2007, a new Commission for Equality and Human Rights will be set up

• part-time nursery education for 3 and 4 year olds

• Since 2003, employees with children under 6 can receive flexible work hours

• Since 2003, paid maternity leave has been extended to 26 weeks
