WaitWait mean to remain inactive or in a state of repose

we waited 20 minutes for the bus.

Wait a moment.

There are 3 different patterns:

1. Wait (imperative): Just wait here with the bags and I’ll go and get a taxi.

2. Wait + for: Don’t worry. I’ll wait for you.

3. Wait + to-infitive: When the band arrived at the concert hall, a large crowd of screaming fans were waiting to greet them

4. Wait + for + object + to-infinitive: They’re waiting for him to make up his mind and won’t do

anything until he does.

Wait Grammar

ExpectExpect means waiting for something you know will happen.

I'm expecting an important phone call.

What do you expect?

Expect Grammar1. Expect + object: She’s expecting a second baby.

2. Expect + to-infinitive: We expect to move into our new flat next week.

3. Expect + that-clause: We expected that the guest house would have much better rooms.

4. Expect + object + to-infinitive: The company expects her to be early.

HopeHope means expect something we want to happen knowing that there is a possibility.

I hope it doesn't rain.

I hope you always find a reason to smile

Hope Grammar1. hope + to-infinitive: I think you were hoping to see your family next week.

2. hope + that clause: I hope that your sister recovers quickly from the operation.

3. hope + for: We’ve already got two boys so we’re hoping for a girl.

WishWish means waiting for something that is impossible or nearly impossible to happen.

I wish to travel.

I wish I were 20 years younger.

Serves to express wishes about past, present or future situations.

There are 3 different patterns:

1. I wish + Past Simple / Continuous. I wish I had more free time

2. I wish + would / could + infinitive I wish you would leave.

3. I wish + Past Perfect I wish I had taken a torch with me.
