● The first vampire myth started with Greek mythology. Sun God Apollo curse a man named Ambrogio so that his skin would burn in sunlight.
● Artemis cursed Ambrogio so that his skin would burn with the touch of silver.
● Artemis later took pity on him and gave him immortality.
Bats● Contrary to popular belief, vampire myths
came before those associated with bats● First linked to bats in 1526, when European
explorers were bitten by bats in S. America, and named them vampire bats, thus beginning a vampire hysteria in Europe.
● After that, people lived in fear for hundreds of years leading up to late 1800s, when Bram Stoker wrote Dracula.

Origins of the "American Vampire"● Although some vampire myths have evolved from a
mix of Native American and African American (slave era), the American vampire myth was formed more from Hollywood.
● The Hollywood version of the vampire myth combined traditional aspects (garlic, staking, sunlight) with the american dream (power, beauty, immortality, sexual irresistibility).
● Vampires in this respect are almost always depicted as being beautiful and hypnotic, unlike other versions where they are monstrous and ugly.
