Warmups

1. Determine the slope of the line passing through: (2,7) (4,-5)

2. Find the slope of each equation:

3x – 6y = 6 y – 2=3(x-1)

3. Find the x- and y-intercepts: 2x + 5y = 20 y= -2x – 4

6-5 Graphing Linear Equations

Objective: To graph a line in slope-intercept form.

Slope – Intercept Form

y = mx +

Slope-Intercept Form

y = mx + b

x & y will stay letters m = slope, written as a fraction b = y-intercept, (0,b)

Steps to Graph1. Graph b (y-intercept) on the y-axis

2. Use slope (as a fraction) to find your next point

- rise/ run from the y-intercept

Example 1: graph y = -1/3 x + 4

m = -1 = 1 = rise

3 -3 run

b = (0,4) start here

y-intercept

Example 2 graph y = x – 5

m = 1 = -1 = rise

1 -1 run

B = (0,-5) start here!

Example 3 graph y = 4x

m = 4 = -4 = rise

1 -1 run

B = (0,0) start here!

Example 4 (it’s standard form) graph 3x + 2y = 12

Use the x- and y-intercepts to graph!

Hint: cover up method

Examples 5 & 6

graph y = -3x + 4 2y

Examples 7 & 8
