Programme.

The 3 Goals set by the client, DBKL are to

• transform the rivers into a vibrant and thriving waterfront by 2020.

functionally and economically.

• create an iconic waterfront development for the city.

CONTENT AND CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT

CONTENT AND CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT

• The project core is a confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, located in the historical part of the city including: o Masjid Jamek, o Law Courts o Medeka Square o China Town

• The site is characterized by long stretches of inaccessible, under utilized and unsafe riverfront

• Rapid urban development throughout the decades have made the river a forgotten component of the city

SUSTAINABILITY • Environmentally responsible design

for new buildings: e.g. energy use, natural daylighting, waste product recycling, use of renewable materials

• Creation of Transit Orientated Developments around existing planned stations

• Restoration of native habitats of local flora and fauna; restoring riparian vegetation and enhancing biodiversity

• A reforestation program to revive a 100-year-old forest – creating an urban green lung

• Local materials have been used in the first stage of built work

• Water Sensitive Urban Design principals - water runoff is cleaned before entering the river

• Bicycle routes

RESILIENCE • The design and initiatives will improve flooding conditions and aid in flood mitigation

• The reinvigorated natural elements will provide a buffer from pollution

• Use of water sensitive urban design restores and maintains the natural richness of the river’s ecology

• The new flora and fauna along the river will improve the wider ecology and in turn enliven the people and communities along the riverbanks

SMARTNESS

• The various zones are planned to be interrelated connecting a mix of new developments with re-developments

• An open space network that is multifunctional and fulfills a wide range of recreational, environmental and cultural functions

• Eco Valleys are designed and composed to display best practice in sustainable landscape design, which forms critical eco system services such as water sensitive urban design, habitat connectivity, biodiversity and bicycle and pedestrian paths

• Education Gardens are working demonstrations where you can see, feel and experience how new habitats are created and grow; how water management and cleansing systems work; what habitats are required for the local fauna.

GRADE OF INNOVATION

• The plan’s goal was to give a make-over to the RoL and create a one-of-a-kind riverscape incorporating history and culture

• The various districts are planned to be interrelated and interconnected, mixing the new and the old, investigating adaptive reuse into derelict heritage buildings and in the process encourage a symbiotic relationship between the varied mix of developments and uses of land

River of Life planning has won several awards: ISOCARP – International Planning Congress : Best Project Institute of Landscape Architecture Malaysian : Innovation Award AECOM Excellence Award

STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK FOR FUTURE PROJECTS

• This project will provide a strategic framework through Urban Design Guidelines and Landscape Design Guidelines to promote cohesive future developments in the entire region
