Water runs downhill

Interactions of minerals and chemicals alter the quality of stream water.

The flow of water is dependent on gravity.

Streams and manmade basins direct the water

How will human actions affect the watershed?

TributaryTributary- a stream that flows into a lake or larger stream

Watershed-Watershed- drainage basin, is the area of land that is drained by a water system.

DivideDivide- separates watersheds by elevation

Channel-Channel- The The path a stream follows

Gradient- the measure of the change in elevation over a certain distance

Discharge- the amount of water that a stream or river carries in a given time

1. Bed Load- large materials like pebbles and boulders along the stream bed

2. Suspended Load- small rocks and soil carried in suspension

3. Dissolved load- material carried in solution

It is your turn to create a model of a watershed.

Using the objects provided in class or brought from home you will place the objects in an area specified by your teacher.

As we work on making our model record your observations in your science journal.

•What do you predict will happen?

•How will human actions affect the area.

•How does this relate to the Earth at large?
