(By M r . L. D. Beaver, Coin c h a t t e r )

Each nonth I have t o f i n d sordething i n t e r e s t i n g w i t h which t o f i l l a page.. Sorae of you w i l l no doubt f e e l t h a t L don't* b o w what I ' m ta lk- i n g about a f t e r you read t h i s , and --I 'll have t o agree. I s tar t nos t sub jec t s i n the middle a d then don: t know which way t o go. This i s no exception. I only hope t h a t I g e t my poin t across ,

The p a s t few years have seen ow teenagers t u r n i n t o U p p i e s , Hoppies, Happies and Flower Children, e t c , There i s no doubt t h a t t h i s i s a young peoples? worl2.l I l o s t contact wi th t h e i r language a few years ago and I ' d wager t h a t a good many parents a r e n ' t up on t h e i r jargon e i t h e r , Our teenagers should be reached so t h a t they w i l l follow t h e f i n e r th ings of l i f e and make f o r b e t t e r l e a d e r s of to-morrow.

Nowadays, a penny d o e s n P t yean much, but $1~60 f o r a s i l v e r c e r t i f i c a t e igeans an e x t r a soda or g a l l o n of gas f o r t h a t Honda. Somehow, it must be put across t h a t i n a few years t h a t Lincoln cen t wi th t h e wheat on the reverse w i l l be out of exis tence. J u s t t e n yea r s ago an Indian-head cent would show up i n change. Not so today,

The advLanced c o l l e c t o r s have t h e i r s e t s proofs and r a r e coins so they can s i t back and play around wi th t h e faB of t h e time. I n t e r e s t now l i e s i n Gold Coins and S i l v e r Bars, How many teenagers a r e i n t e r e s t e d i n saving a bar of s i l v e r ? How rnFy a re w i l l i n g t o save any money?

I f the teenager could be made i n t e r e s t e d i n t h e beauty and h i s t o r y and t h e coming r a r i t y of t h e 20th century coins , perhaps h i s i n t e r e s t could or would go back t o t h e o lder co ins ,

Eight or n ine months a year the teenager r eads books, s t u d i e s l e s s o n s and th inks t h a t he i s i n pr ison, so when vacat ion comes he no longer w a n t s t o study. Books a re g r e a t f o r re ference , b u t could he see and be t o l d by an i n d i v i d u a l who i s t r u l y i n t e r e s t e d i n co l l ec t ing , t h e background of our coinage, perhaps he wo~?-d be nore i n t e r e s t e d i n c o l l e c t i n g . Who wants t o study about something t h a t they know they can never have or be a p a r t of?

I n t h e eleven y e a s t h a t our c lub has ex i s t ed , we have i n t e r e s t e d over 500 people, How nal.y of t h e f i r s t members a r e s t i l l i n t h e club? How many juniors do we have?

Those who have been i n t e r e s t e d i n c o l l e c t i n g these years should have some knowledge of nux~isnat ics . It i s t h e o b l i g a t i o n of each and every one of the o lder c o l l e c t o r s should be able t o t each a new c o l l e c t o r about h i s own type of c o l l e c t i n g or r e f e r hin t o another co l l - e c t o r t h a t s p e c i a l i z e s i n what t h a t teenager i s i n t e r e s t e d i n ,

Just because t h e advanced c o l l e c t o r has long ago completed h i s s e t s of Liber ty Stcanding Q u a r t e r s or Mercury Di i~es , ha should n o t scoff a t t h e new co l l ec to r and h i s 20th century coins, He should he lp make access ib le t o t h e junior some of t h e o lder coins t h a t a r e no longer i n c i r c u l a t i o n a t a p r i ce t h e junior could a f fo rd , Reneber back when you old t i n o r s s;'i:rted c o l l e c t i n g the valuable c o l l e c t i o n s t h a t you have to-day were as easy t o c o l l e c t as the Lincoln Memorial s e t i s to-day,

I have heakd t h a t some schools have a Numismatic Class. One of t h e ways t o gwt a Meri t Badge i n Scouting i s coin co l l ec t ing . C.OMMOI%JEALTH C OINAGE - GUYAiTA BY C. R. J o s s e t

(From Coins, Medals & Currency, October, 1.967) Guyana a t t a ined f u l l independence i n 1966, a s a member of t h e

B r i t i s h Commonwealth b u t before t h i s d a t e t h s country was known as B r i t i s h Guiana, a crown colony of Great Br i t a in .

It i s s i t u a t e d on t h e nor thern coas t of South America between t h e Orinoco and the Amazon, wi th the A t l a n t i c Ocecm t o t h e nor th , Surinam on t h e e a s t and Venezuela on t h e west, w i t h an a r e a of approxi- mately 83,000 square miles.

It has an est imated population of 650,000 cons i s t ing mainly of Eas t Indians and Africans, wi th about 120,000 mixed races , inc luding whites.

The Spaniards claim t o be t h e f i r s t i n B r i t i s h Guiana, landing i n 1499; b u t t h e e a r l i e s t s e t t l e r s were English, who landed i n 1604, under Capt. Leigh, more s e t t l e r s following i n 1616 and 1627.

I n the meantime, t h e Dutch had a l s o formed a se t t lement i n 1616, a s w e l l as t h e French about t h e same period.

From t h a t time t h e r e was continuous f r i c t i o n between t h e r i v a l s e t t l e r s . Lord Willoughby, t h e sponsor of t h e Barbados se t t lement founded a colony i n t h e present neighbouring s t a t e of Surinam i n 1633, b u t t h i s was captured ,and t h e Engl ish d r iven out. It w a s eventua l ly ceded t o t h e Dutch a t t h e Peace of Breda,

After a number of changes and rese t t l ement B r i t a i n captured Guiana then i n t h e t h r e e separa te se t t l e~ .aen t s of Berbice, Demerary. and Essequibo from t h e Dutch i n 1803, and it was f i n a l l y confirmed as a B r i t i s h possession i n 1814.

I n 1961 B r i t i s h Guiana a t t a i n e d f u l l i n t e r n a l s e l f government and f i n a l l y , i n 1966, . became an independent s t a t e , renamed Guyana? w i t h a new Assembly and e l e c t i o n s by propor t ional r ep resen ta t ion .

There i s some u n c e r t a i n t y as t o which coins f i rs t c i rcu la tbd but t h e Spanish Americ,m 4 o l l a r wi th a c i r c u l a r hole and a c r e n a e d edge w a s probably the e a r l i e s t ,

The cent re of t h i s cu t w a s n o t q u i t e i n t h e cen t re of the coin, but s l i g h t l y lower, leaving enough space f o r t h e oval countermark E & D t o be made above t h e hole. It was given a value of f i v e s h i l l i n g s ? while t h e c u t out 3 GL piece was bel ieved t o have a value of 1 5 pence wl th t h e counter stamp 3. BTS;, The E & D s tands f o r I1Essequibo and fienerarau while 3 GL s tands f o r 3 gu i lde r s . The 3 BTS i s somewhat mysterious and one can only conclude t h a t t h e s i l v e r cen t re was c a l l e d "3 b i t s n .

The d a t e when these coins were c u t i s considered t o be between t h e years 1873 -1809. It i s c e r t a i n , t h a t theBraz i l i an 64-00 r e i s gold coin of the 1727-1804 i s s u e w a s c i r c u l a t e d about t h e sane time, some of these coins have the counterstamp E D while o the r s have no mark a t all,

P a ~ e 101 The f i r s t coins o f f i c i a l l y issued were t h e . r e s u l t of a decision of

the committee for the settlements of Demerara and Essequibo, known as the Committee of Privy Council for Trade, who recommended t h a t £ lOpOOO of s i lve r should be made i n t o token coinage.

The Br i t i sh Government decided t o r e t a in the old Dutch currency when issuing a s e t of coins which i s as follows: 16 du i t s (or pfennigs) equal t o 1 s t iver ; 23 s t ive r s equal t o 1 guilder, The guilder was equal t o l s h 1/3d English giving a s t i v e r a va3ue of nearly 7/12ths of a penny. The denominations issued dated 1809 were three, ~ W O , one, half and quarter guilders with the bust of George 111,

This issue was followed by the only copper coins issued--a s t ive r and half s t iver struck i n 1813. Three years l a t e r , in1816 another issue of guilders cme out. No fur ther issues were made u n t i l 1832, when a similm issue was made, plu a one eighth guilder, but with the head of William 1V. I n 1836 the inscription on the reverse was a g a n "Brit ish Guianan being substituted fo r "United Colony of Demerary and EssequiboI1 but the three and two guilders were omitted. I n 1838, the old Dutch monetary system was abolished;-and money baaed on the American dol la rs and cents, giving the three-guilder piece the same value as the dol lm. From t h i s date, ho coins were issued u n t i l 1891, when a Br i t i sh fourpenny with the head of Queen Victoria was issued, again with a cl~mzcd . inscription, reading "Brit ish Guiana and Wes$ Indies". There were no other denominatiorls issued u n t i l the recent Br i t i sh Caribbean Terr i tor ies coinage, The prob:!.e;n of payment for t raders during the middle and l a t e 19 th century must have caused considerable additional calculations as the Englishs Spanish, Mexican, South American and United States coins were made l e g a l tender, The fourpenny piece, with i t s "Bri t ish Guiana and West Indiesl1 inscr5.p=- t ion was issued i n Edward V l l ' s and Gcol-zc V r s re ign but from 1917, t?? inscr ip t ion was "Bri t ish Guianatl. After George V 1 1945 issue, the i5: - ;~17 ceased i n favour of the Br i t i sh Caribbean Coinage which s t i l l continues- -------- -------- -------- -------- - - - - - . y = F .
