ImPACT Testing Immediate Post Concussion Assessment & Cognitive Testing

• Tests verbal and visual memory, reaction time, and impulse control.• All Fall athletes in collision and contact sports were tested this week.• Post Injury Test will be taken when symptom-free after exertion. Results

will be compared to the athlete’s baseline test or normative data.

Any head injury which results in symptoms is considered a Concussion.

The Concussion Checklist:Decrease blood flow to the brain by limiting screen time, thought and

physical activity.Once symptom-free, exercise for 20 minutes.Still symptom-free, Impact test is administered. ImPact Test is passed and cleared to participate in non-contact drills.The following day, still symptom-free, cleared to participate in controlled

contact drillsProgression to Full Participation

If the ImPact test is failed, rest for 3-5 days and refer the athlete to a Physician.

Injury Care Protocol

1. Report the injury to your Coach.

2. See and get evaluated by the Athletic Trainer.

3. Parent is contacted, if necessary.

4. Referral to a Physician, when appropriate.

The injured athlete is expected to be in the athletic training room everyday for treatment until pain-free return to activity.

Expectations ofWVHS Athletes

ACADEMICS FIRST

• Eligibility

• Checked every week on Monday morning.

• Must be passing 5 classes.

• Spring eligibility

• Eligibility is based on 1st Semester grades.

• MUST have passed 5 classes.

Expectations ofWVHS Athletes

• Make and keep commitments, and follow rules of school, athletic code, and team during their high school career.

• Be coachable. Have a positive attitude.

• Be tobacco, alcohol & drug free.

• Set realistic and challenging goals.

• Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times, in an out of season.

• Have a good work ethic.

• Be a leader and a positive role model.

Expectations ofWVHS Parents

• Notify coaches of ANY injury or illness that our staff may not be aware of.

• Be Positive- Being on one of our high school teams is an accomplishment.

• Be Supportive- Nothing can erode teamwork faster than athletes doubting the capabilities of their coaches.

• Be a good role model- Demonstrate positive behavior and sportsmanship as a fan.

• Read, understand, discuss, and MOST OF ALL monitor the Athletic Code of Conduct.

• Attend pre-season meetings.• Learn the rules of your particular sport.• Encourage commitment and positive values

ISSUES NOT APPROPRIATE TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES

• Other athletes

• Philosophy- Play Calling

• Playing time

• Team or individual strategy.

• Do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a practice or contest.

• These surprise meetings rarely accomplish anything and do not promote resolutions. Call or ask the coach for a time to meet.

ISSUES THAT ARE APPROPRIATE TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES

• Concerns about academic eligibility.

• Concerns about behavior.

• Various ways to help son/daughter improve.

• The treatment of your son/daughter.

PROCEDURES & LINES OF COMMUNICATION TO FOLLOW

1. Communication between player and coach to resolve problems or conflicts.

2. Communication between parent and coach to resolve problems or conflicts.

3. Communication between athletic director, parents, coach, and athlete to resolve conflicts.

4. Communication between principal, athletic director, and parents to resolve conflicts.

Code of ConductSubstance Use or Possession

• Violation of the Athletic/Activities code of conduct if a student possesses, uses, distributes, or sells illegal drugs.

• In addition, if a student attends a party or gathering where alcohol or drugs are present or being consumed he/she would be violating the code of conduct.

• Voluntary Admission/1st Offense

• Student may admit to a violation only one (1) time during his/her career.

• Must occur with the first 24 hours following the rules violation.

• The student may be required to attend an education program and/or may be suspended from 1 or more contests/events.

**Voluntary admission is not applicable if authorities respond to a gathering where alcohol or drugs are present and report to school officials.**

1st Offense:• Suspended 40% of athletic/activity scheduled competition.

• If student completes an assessment program from a professional agency, suspension is reduced to 20%.

• During suspension, the student may practice but will NOT participate in contests/events.

• If student does not complete the suspension, the penalty will continue into the student’s next activity.

2nd Offense:• Suspended for one calendar year from participating in all school

activities.• Before reinstatement, the student must provide evidence of

completion of a required program.3rd Offense:• Student will NOT participate in a school activity for the rest of

his/her high school years until submitting substantial evidence of rehabilitation to seek reinstatement.

Code of ConductTobacco Use or Possession

1st Offense:

• Suspended 10% of scheduled contests/events.

2nd Offense:

• Suspended 20% of scheduled contest/events.

3rd Offense:

• Suspended for one calendar year from participating in all school activities.

• Student will NOT participate in a school activity for the rest of his/her high school years until submitting substantial evidence of rehabilitation to seek reinstatement.

Code of ConductHazing/Harassment/Bullying

**Hazing includes any humiliating or dangerous activity expected of a student in order to join a group regardless of that student’s willingness to participate.**

UNACCEPTABLE AND NOT TOLERATED at WVHS!!• Students involved in this type of activity may be suspended from

athletic/activity contests/events or removed from their teams permanently.

• If a student is unsure of an appropriate behavior or practice, a building administrator can clarify.

IHSA DRUG TESTING POLICY

• Required signature on athletic registration• Random drug testing throughout the school

year.• Randomly select 12 individuals.• Test is administered during any of the 3

seasons.• WVHS has NOT been tested recently.• Athletic Department anticipates it will happen

this school year.
