We Can Compare Two Texts on the Same Topic

Written by: Katie George

Our Target Today:

We are learning to compare and contrast two texts on the same topic.

This means that the books are about the same thing!

These two books are both about lizards.

Some of the information in the books will be the same

and some of the information in the books

will be different.

When we compare books on the same topic we can look at lots of different

things:

•  The illustrations or photographs

•  The non-fiction text features

•  The information in the words

Then we can ask ourselves:

What can we learn from these that is the same and different?

This is the one we are practicing

today

Let’s Try One Together Remember to think about:

What is the same about the

two books?

What is different about the two books?

AND...

Here are two books on the same topic...

Monarch butterflies have four stages in their life cycle. The stages are the egg, the caterpillar, the chrysalis and then the adult butterfly.

Monarch butterflies have four stages in their life cycle. When they are a caterpillar they eat the leaves of a milkweed plant. When they are an adult butterfly they eat nectar from flowers.

How are these two books the SAME?

Both books tell us that Monarch butterflies have

four stages in their life cycle.

How are these two books DIFFERENT?

Book One tells me what the four stages of the life cycle are, but Book Two doesn’t.

There are many different acts in a circus. Many circuses have clowns. They perform and try to make the audience laugh by doing silly things.

Doctors use a tool called a stethoscope to listen to a person’s heart. This helps them know if the heart is healthy or not. If you are hurt or sick, you should go to the doctor so they can help you.

Doctors use an X-RAY to look at a person’s bones. This is how a doctor can tell if a bone is broken. If you are hurt or sick, you should go to the doctor so they can help you.

Last One! Remember to think about:

What is the same about the

two books?

What is different about the two books?

AND...

Male deer have antlers. They use their antlers to fight off other deer and to protect themselves. The antlers fall off every year and new ones grow back.

A fawn is a baby deer. Some fawns have spots to help them hide from danger. When the fawn grows up, it will lose the spots. If it is a male deer, it will start growing antlers.

So Let’s Review

There are lots of books that are about the

same topic

Some of the information in the books will be the same

and some of the information in the books

will be different.

When we compare books on the same topic we can look at lots of different

things:

•  The illustrations or photographs

•  The non-fiction text features

•  The information in the words

Then we can ask ourselves:

What can we learn from these that is the same and different?

This is the one we practiced today

So How Can We Use This Now?

•  If I am interested in grasshoppers, now I know that I should read more than one book to learn about them.

•  Why? – Because even though books can be on the same

topic, they can have different information!

– So if I only read one book, I will only learn some information about grasshoppers.

– But if I read more than one book, I will learn lots of information about grasshoppers!
