“We didn’t have toys, nothing was done for us, so the result was that we lived in our imagination most of the
time. We devised things; we were readers, and we would transfer everything we
had seen on the printed page to the backyard in the form
of high drama.” Harper Lee
“We were readers”
Nelle Harper Lee, one of America’s most be- loved authors, gave the characters in To Kill a Mock- ingbird literary immortality, and
in doing so, she achieved the same for herself. Through her portrayal of
heroism in everyday life and courage in the face of overwhelming odds, Lee showed all readers that bravery and wisdom come from within and that the in-
nocence of a child can triumph over the prejudice of adults. For her indelible creation, Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal
of Freedom in 2007.
