WALT: solve addition and subtraction word problems

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUBMIT TODAY’S WORK

Today you will practise more addition and subtraction word problems.

Example: I have 20 fruits in my kitchen. 5 of them are bananas. How many fruits do I have that are not bananas?

Sometimes it helps to draw a picture of the word problem. So you can understand what is happening.

5

20

?

20 – 5 = 15. There are 15 fruits that are not bananas.

Sometimes word problems require you to do two calculations. This is called a two-step word

problem.

For example:

Marcus had 15 sweets. He gave 5 to his friend, Jack. He ate 3 of them after dinner. How many

sweets does Marcus have now?

15 – 5 – 3 15 – 5 = 10 10 – 3 = 7

Marcus has 7 sweets left.

Remember RUCSAC when answering word problems and that you can always draw a picture to

help you.
