Wednesday, 3/18/2015○ (4th period - 2 DNA videos)○ Finish the Microscope Lab
○45 minutes○Including Part E
○ Prokaryotic/Eukaryotic Review PowerPoint○ Pick up Prokaryotic/Eukaryotic Worksheet
on front table○ RETURN UNIT 5 TEST○ HW: Bellringer 6.1
& Prokaryotic/Eukaryotic worksheet
Prokaryotic
Genomes
Prokaryotes
The Who’s Who of Infectious Bacteria
E. coliSalmonella
Chlamydia
Streptococcus
Meningitis
Gonorrhea
Bacteria Get a Bad Rap○ Life would be impossible without
bacteria○ Decomposition○ Fixing of nitrogen○ Intestinal symbionts
Crazy facts!○ 10x as many bacterial cells in you as
human cells (100 trillion)
○ 4 pounds of bacteria in you right now
○ More bacteria in your mouth than people in the world (every kiss exchanges 10 million to 1 billion bacteria)

Remember Unit 4?
Genomic Differences○Our DNA and thus our
heredity is much different from bacteria!
○We taught you heredity for eukaryotes (humans specifically)
1. Circular Chromosome○ Still a DNA double helix
2. # of chromosomes○Eukaryotes
have many (the # depends on the species)○Humans – 46
○Prokaryotes have 1
3. No pairs of chromosomes○ Since they only have 1, bacteria do not
have 2 copies of every gene like we do○ They also do not reproduce sexually
4. No histone wrapping○ Much simpler chromosomal structure○ Different mechanism for controlling
gene expression
5. Much less DNA
○Millions, not billions of nucleotides
○About 10% as many genes as us
○Much, much less non-coding DNA
6. Not found in a nucleus
Summary
○Prokaryotes are much more simple than eukaryotes!
○Classwork/HW sheet○Bellringer next class
