Wednesday 9/3

Top of seating chart = front of room by whiteboard

Bottom = back of room

Objectives:•Develop teamwork•Review (x, y) graphing on Cartesian plane•Review congruence of shapes and rigid transformations

Do now:1. Graph points taped to your desk; connect

into shapes.2. Cut out shapes.3. Find matching shapes within team of four

(pod).4. Discuss: How do you know they match? Be

specific.

You are graded on team clean-up:1. Collect trash on floor, on or in desks. Place in trash or

recycling.2. Return books and tools to shelf in back.3. Erase marks on desk if necessary.4. Be seated before bell.5. Once bell rings, push in all chairs all the way to desk.

(Period 6 places all chairs upside-down on desk.)6. Rotating responsibility for books/tools shelf clean-up.

Today it is team I ‘s job to make sure shelf is tidy.

Friday 9/4

Friday 9/4

1. Complete ‘About Me’ part of syllabus.2. Review required materials.3. Review some class expectations.4. Complete syllabus ‘Review Questions’ with

team-mates.

Monday 9/7

Labor Day – No school

Tuesday 9/8

Objectives:

•Review how you are graded for Professionalism•Explore types of Rigid Transformations:•Translation (slide)•Rotation (spin)•Reflection (flip or mirror)

•Check out textbook, turn in syllabus

Everyone starts with 100% for these grades:1. Being on time, every day.2. Having the tools to do the job.3. Keeping track of commitments in planner.4. Following school & workplace rules.5. Cleaning up the team workspace.

Have you checked HW & written in your planner?

•Write your name in ink in front inside cover of your assigned textbook.•Write the textbook number in the ‘Review Questions’ of your completed & signed syllabus.•Be ready to turn pages 5-6 of syllabus. Keep pp. 1-4.•Have you checked HW for week on back wall? Written in planner?

1. Leave the first two pages of your new geometry notebook blank for a Table of Contents.

2. On page 3 of your notebook, plot the points from the paper on your desk and connect into shapes.

3. Talk with your partners about how to:•Turn Shape 1 into Shape 2.•Turn Shape 1 into Shape 3.•Turn Shape 1 into Shape 4.•Turn Shape 1 into Shape 5.

4. Any member should be ready to present.

•One representative from each group explains to class: How to turn Shape 1 into Shape 2, etc.•Discuss terminology & put in notes: Translate (slide), Reflect (flip), Rotate (spin), Rigid Transformations, Superimpose (perfectly sit on top of, Pre-image (original shape), Image (final shape).

Wednesday 9/9

Do Now1. Have late but complete syllabi in front of you.2. Have geometry equipment laid out in front of

you.3. Have notebook open to HW.4. Graph each of the shapes on the paper in front

of you. Make a new graph for each in your notebook. Label them with the shape number, “Shape #3” “Shape #7” etc.

How to use a protractor to measure angles

5. Measure and label all the angles with your protractor. Discuss with partners.

6. Calculate and label the lengths of each side in ‘units’, using the Pythagorean Theorem, if you know how. (Extra credit, but must show all calculations!)

Thursday 9/10

Have your extra credit open from yesterday…using the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate side lengths in your two shapes.

Is your planner up-to-date?

Key Ideas …. to Note (write in notebook)

•Two shapes are congruent if their shape and size are identical.•This means that their corresponding angles and side lengths are the same.•The first shape or pre-image can be superimposed directly over the final image by using rigid transformations: translation (slide), rotation (spin), reflection (flip).

How to use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate side lengths

Do Now1. Measure and label all angles in both of your

shapes from yesterday.2. Calculate and label all side lengths on these

shapes. Use the Pythagorean Theorem with ‘units’ of measure.

3. Compare your shapes to those of your partners. Find the ones that are congruent.

Friday 9/11

Do Now1. Have HW open within a minute of the bell.

Materials out on desk for a second check.2. From Wednesday and Thursday, your two shapes

should be labeled with all angle measures and side lengths. If not, do that right away. Use the Pythagorean Theorem with ‘units’ of measure. Help your partners out.

3. Your shapes should be labeled in your notebook as they are on the paper: ‘Shape 1’…

4. Compare your shapes to those of your partners. Find the ones that are congruent.

•Turned in signed and completed syllabus.•Taken their assigned textbook home for the year.•All the required materials, every day:

•An updated planner.•See me if you have not done one of these things.

At this point everyone should have:

4. Look for a different shape that is congruent to one of yours. It should have a different shape #.

5. Write a paragraph about one of your shapes and its match.

“Shape #___ and Shape #___ are congruent because they have corresponding angles of _______, _______, _______ (and _____.) They have corresponding side lengths of ________, ________, ________ (and _______.) Therefore, their ________ and ________ are the same.”

Monday 9/14

Top of seating chart = front of room by whiteboard

Bottom = back of room

Monday 9/14

Have the HW due last Friday (already checked) open on your desk.

Have your correction pen out.

Students explain HW & make corrections

From Friday: Write a sentence about one of your shapes and its match:“Shape #___ and Shape #___ are congruent because they have corresponding angles of _______, _______, _______ (and _____.) They have corresponding side lengths of ________, ________, ________ (and _______.) Therefore, their ________ and ________ are the same.”

Claim, Evidence, Reason

Isometric = “same” + “measurements”Isometric shapes = congruent shapes

Same angles and side lengths

Isometric transformation =rigid transformation

Open Notes Quiz

•May not use a cell phone.•May use note book.•Solo effort, not a team quiz.•Do not write on quiz question.•Bubble in completely.

Tuesday 9/15

Do Now: On a graph in your notes, draw polygon with corners

(2,2), (2,4), (4,4), (6,2)

Now rotate this around origin 90o, 180o, 270o.That’s one pre-image and three images.

Starting with the same coordinates, make a new graph, using (1,3) as your Point of Rotation (PoR).

Transformation Rules

(x, y) → (x + 3, y – 1)Pre-image transforms to Image

Take all x-coordinates, add 3 to get new x’s.-1 from all y-coordinates to get new y’s.

(x, y) → (-x, y)(x, y) → (y, x)

Wednesday 9/16

Will check HW due today, tomorrow.

You will understand it better after today’s class.

Improve it tonight.

Explore Transformation Rules

• Graph of your choice. Label.• Transform with first rule on handout.• Label correctly.• Transform second shape into third shape with another rule.• Write down what your rules do.• Share your conclusions with partners.• One member each group shares with class.

Thursday 9/17

Thursday 9/17

•Have HW out for quick check.•People presenting transformation rules: be ready to go.•We’ll go over HW last.

Ch. 7 Sections 1 & 2Ch. 0 Section 1

Khan Academy units:Transformations & Analytic Geometry

Do Now: List all the ways to prove two shapes are congruent. Describe the tools required.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

List all the ways to prove two shapes are congruent. Describe

the tools required.1. Cut out and superimpose shapes.2. Trace one shape on patty paper, rigidly translate, rotate,

reflect to superimpose on other.3. Measure angles with a protractor, compare side lengths

with a compass.4. Measure angles with a protractor, calculate side lengths

with the Pythagorean Theorem.5. Do x and y coordinates change using a rigid transformation

‘rule’?

List all types of Geometric Transformation

Translation

•Translation is a rigid transformation that slides the shape.•May be in the x- or y-direction, or both.•Can use two patty papers to translate along a Line of Translation (LoT).•Can use an ‘algebra rule’ to translate. What are these rules?

Reflection

•Reflection is a rigid transformation that mirrors a shape across a line of reflection (LoR).•Can use one folded patty paper to reflect.•Can use an ‘algebra rule’ to reflect. What are these rules?

Translation & Reflection Practice

•7 min - With your partners, answer Q’s 1-3, pp. 362 in notebook.•Be prepared to present.

Rotation

•Rigid Transformation where shapes turns around a Point of Rotation.

Dilation

•Non-rigid transformation where the x and y coordinates are multiplied by the same constant.•Makes shape grow or shrink equally in the x and y directions.•Angles stay the same, but side lengths change.

Stretch

•Non-rigid transformation where x and y are multiplied by different constants.•Shape does not grow or shrink by same amount in both directions, so that both it’s angles and side lengths change.
