MARKET WRAP
Indian markets ends down more than 3%, Nifty slips below 5600, down 198 pts.
Food inflation eased to 8.53% while fuel price inflation is unchanged at 13.53%.
Global markets ends down on global economic uncertainty, DJIA ends down 1.4%
Indian equity market ended down for second consecutive week on weak global cues
and FII’s pull out funds as nifty slipped below crucial level of 5400 and tested a crucial
support of 5440. Nifty shredded more than 3% or 198 points to settle at 5551.45 while
Sensex sliced 617.15 pts to settle at 18518.81. Bank nifty future ended down 368 pts to
end at 11144. In Frontline stocks, R-Comm, R-Cap, Axis, and IDFC sliced 16% - 20%.
RBI in its credit policy meet on 3rd May hiked the base rates to curb rising inflation by
hiking reverse repo & repo rate by 50 BPS to 6.25% and 7.25% respectively while CRR
is kept unchanged at 6%. India’s food price inflation eased down to 8.53% vs. 8.76%
w/w while fuel price inflation was unchanged at 13.53% which is expected to hike as
petrol & diesel prices are set to hike post assembly polls. India’s headline WPI inflation
is expected to remain below 9% on easing of food price inflation.
Global equity markets ended down on global economic uncertainty as Greece
economic woes and higher jobless claims in U.S hits investors’ sentiments. Jobless
claims came up by 49K at 474K while ADP non-farm employment claims came at 179K
vs. 200K. DJIA ended down 1.4% while Nasdaq slipped 1.6%. European markets ended
down due to concerns over Greece leaving the Euro zone could cascade problems for
Euro and weaker data like German factory orders down at (-) 4% vs. 1.9% and EUR
retail sales down at (-) 1.0%. Asian markets ended down in red with Hangseng & Straits
times hit worst, down 2.4%.
