Common Core Objectives

• English Language Arts Literacy – Focus on key features of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Language Text complexity increases across grades, requires growth

of comprehension skills Responding to informational and fictional text through

writing, using research to inform writing Develop a range of useful communication and

interpersonal skills Includes essential “rules” of English, stresses importance

of vocabulary development

Common Core Objectives

• Mathematics – Focus on 3 critical areas: Fractions – Fluency with Addition/Subtraction,

understanding of Multiplication and some Division of fractions

Extending division – 2 digit divisors, operations with decimals to hundredths

Geometric Measurement – understand concepts of volume

Social Studies

• Topics covered include:– Early settlement of America– Jamestown and Roanoke– The Plymouth Colony– The 13 British colonies– The French and Indian War

Science

Homework

Reinforces skills and concepts taught during school

Helps students develop important study skills

Keeps families informed about their child’s learning

Organization/Study Skills

• Organization is key to academic success – makes learning more efficient and reduces stress and anxiety.

• With each stage of schooling we expect students to become more independent as learners.

• Time management skills are taught in schools, can be reinforced at home.

Choice Books

• Big question for parents and educators is: What motivates some children to want to read, even when there is no reward or grade attached? – CHOICE is a powerful

motivator in getting students to read and to become engaged readers.

Daily News

By exploring current issues we can help bridge the gap between the classroom and the outside world.

Leads to more effective connections between the past and the present.

Creates an awareness and helps develop a sense of inquiry.

Behavior Expectations

Students are expected to:

Follow directions given by adults.

Listen when others are speaking.

Speak kindly to and about others.

Respect classroom learning environments.

Feel free to send in treats for birthdays, just send me an e-mail ahead of time so I will know when to expect them.

Also, please pre-cut items if necessary, and send plates or napkins.
