I was born in New Jersey.

I have lived in NJ, CO, NY, MN, & TX.

I have lived in TX for 28 years.

with a BS in Chemistry.

I have worked for many years in the environmental chemistry business.

I have two sons who graduated from Tomball High School.

I live in Houston,

With two cats.

Class Norms• Be in your seat, prepared and ready to

work when the bell rings.• Be respectful of your classmates, the

teacher and the classroom/equipment.• Be dressed in school appropriate attire.• Cell phones and other personal electronic

devices will be turned off and not visible.

Class Expectations• You will need a bound composition

book, paper, pencils and pens and are expected to bring these to class.

• You will take Cornell Notes during each instructional period. That includes today!

Cornell Notes• Note taking system designed to improve your

study skills and your grades.• Without writing notes you will forget more

than 60% of what you see and hear.• With writing notes you will remember more

than 60% of what you see and hear.• When you properly review your notes you will

remember 90 -100% of the material!

Cornell Notes – Header• Name• Class/Period• Topic/Objective• Essential Question

Cornell Notes – Notes• Main ideas• Important Information• Paraphrase- put it in your own

words!• Be concise• Use abbreviations

Cornell Notes – NotesHow do I know what’s important?• Repetition or stressed inflection• Voice gets louder/softer or faster/slower• Writing on the board or overhead• “This will be on the test.”• Gestures (hand/arm movements)• “This is important.”

Cornell Notes – Questions/Keywords

• Questions which are answered in the notes on the right

• Questions you still need the answer to--ask a friend or the teacher after class

• Questions the teacher might ask on a test• Critical words or concepts

Cornell Notes - Summary At the end of each class, review your

notes and write a brief summary of your notes. In a few sentences, describe the main points and concepts from your notes.

Cornell Notes - Review• Fill in details for clarity.• Look up definitions of words you don’t know.• Delete irrelevant information.• Add symbols to highlight important points or key

words.• Cover the note taking column (right side) with a

sheet of paper. Look at the key points or questions of the left of the paper, and say aloud, in your own words, the answers to the questions, facts, or ideas indicated by those key points or questions.

Class Expectations• You will take Cornell Notes during each

instructional period. That includes today!• You will follow all safety rules and

procedures.• You will turn in a signed safety contract

before participating in lab activities.• You will know the evacuation route for this

class.

Fire Drills• You MUST stay with your class.• You MUST return to class as soon as

possible when the fire drill is dismissed.

Test Days• Science test days are Tuesday and

Thursday. • Tests will be given more often on

Thursday.• There will be a test given at 3 weeks

and at the end of the 6 weeks.• It is imperative that you review your

daily instruction and prepare early for tests.

Tutorials• Tutorials will be held every day

between 2:30pm – 4:30pm• The list of teachers and days they

tutor can be found on the syllabus

Course Syllabus• Will be available on my Teacher

website and on LMS.• There will be a few copies of the

course syllabus along with the student/parent contract provided for those who can not print at home.

Tablets• Payment for your Tablet computer must be

made by September 5th.• Tablets will be issued on September 16th• Tablet Camp will start on September 16th

• Procedures will be done during Eagle’s nest• Tablet payment is $70.00 for the year ($15

per 6 weeks)

Breakfast• Breakfast will be available to ALL

students FREE of charge every school day.

• The serving lines will be CLOSED at 7:15.

• Buses will arrive at school from 6:45 – 7:05.

• Car riders need to plan their arrival at school accordingly.

Open House• Open House will be held on Thursday,

September 12 from 6:45pm-9:00pm• Parents will follow the students schedule

visiting classes.• Teachers will give a short presentation about

the class.• This is not the time for parent/teacher

conferences.

Icebreaker – get to know one another

• Get into small groups (2-4 people)• Find 6 things you have in common

(cannot be you are all chemistry or Klein Forest students)

• Find one unique thing for each group member

Exit Ticket• Work in your groups to write the

summary of your Cornell Notes• Each person must turn in their notes

before leaving
