• Ensure that you child takes the right courses

• More rigorous courses will prepare them better

• Make use they use their time outside of school wisely

• Help them start thinking about the future

• Get help when you need it

• Most of 8th graders plan to attend and finish college

• Students need to take college prep courses in high school

• Without college prep courses, YOU CANNOT ENTER COLLEGE!!

North QuincyHigh School Graduation Requirements

• English 4 years• Mathematics 3 years• Science 3 years• Social Studies 4 years• Foreign Language 2 years (of the same language)

• Physical Education 4 years• Electives— creative and performing arts, career & technical

education, & AFJROTC, etc.• MCAS graduation requirement:

ELA: 240+, Math: 240+, Science: 220+• 100 total credits/points

Promotion Requirements

• Students must earn a minimum of:• 20 points to be in 10th grade• 45 points to be in 11th grade• 70 points to be in 12th grade• 100 points to graduate

College Prep Requirements

• English 4 years• Mathematics 3 years

Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2

• Science 3 years (2 years of lab science)

• Social Studies 2 years• Foreign Language 2-3 years (of the same

language)

• Electives – creative and performing arts, career and technical education, etc.

Course Selection process

• Course selection materials were distributed to students in their homeroom

• Students must choose 5 academic courses (English, Math, Science, World History and Foreign Language) and 1 elective

• Students have to choose two alternates to their primary elective

• Students have to choose an alternate to their primary foreign language

• Middle school teachers select appropriate levels (standard, honors, advanced)

• Parents must sign and return the course selection sheet to the middle school by the school’s deadline

• Middle School deadline is assigned by each middle school

Course Selection process

• Middle schools will distribute a verification of courses selected

• Changes to these course selections can be made prior to the end of the school year

• Before your child starts high school, a printed schedule from North Quincy High will be mailed home in August with additional instructions

• Schedules can be changed before the start of school by the mail-in/drop-off process explained in summer mailing

9th Grade Orientation Day

• Sept. 7, 2011- First day of school for 9th grade only

• Students attend opening day assembly• Escorted to extended homeroom• Shortened class periods• Free luncheon/picnic with faculty • Parent orientation in Media Center
