Fr. Matt’s Corner: …
That I was blind and now I see…
My dear friends in Christ, in his book (And
Now I See) about coming to life, Father (now
Bishop) Bob Barron (one of my seminary
professors) begins this way: “Christianity is, above
all, a way of seeing… Christians see differently, and
that is why their prayer, their worship, their action,
their whole way of being in the world have a
distinctive accent and flavor.” That’s what our
baptism accomplishes in us, if we dare to live it out.
God is light – While I am in the world, I am
the light of the world. God is life - I am the way, the
truth, and the life. God is love – As the Father loves
me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. God
wants nothing other than for us to be godlike – fully
alive, a-love, and a-light. This whole season of Lent
has been and is a time of re-preparing us for the
powerful gift of our baptism into Christ Jesus, that
we might be ever more enlightened to see more
clearly, more really. Prayer (union with God –
making time for what is most real), fasting
(refraining from all that is less real), and almsgiving
(becoming more real ourselves by loving as we have
been loved by God) are all ways of becoming more
loving, more alive, and less blind.
As Jesus rubbed the clay into the blind
man’s eyes in the gospel today so that he might
begin to see, so we began these forty days of Lent by
having ashes rubbed onto our foreheads. Able now
to see, he endured ridicule and skepticism from the
Pharisees, so we too endure ridicule and skepticism
from the cultural elites in our American society. As
he found new and more abundant life through his
association with Jesus Christ, so we – when we
become a member of Jesus Christ through Baptism,
and we receive that same Jesus Christ in the
Eucharist, and when we meet his forgiving love in
the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) – find
new freedom and life in Him.
Not as man sees does God see, because man
sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the
heart. May we Live as children of light, for light
produces every kind of goodness and righteousness
and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
May we remain open to the grace of conversion this
Lent – that beautiful, amazing gift of Grace. Then
we might sing together, “Was blind, but now I see.”
Then through us, too, the works of God might be
made visible. Let your life have that “distinctive
accent and flavor” of one who sees anew in Jesus
Christ.
Peace to all of you, my friends, this Holy Day, and
to all who love the Lord in simplicity of heart,
Fr. Matt
Ask Father: This week’s question: “I was baptized and raised a
Catholic, but I now have not been attending Mass regularly.
What should I do to get back on track?”
I’m so glad that you submitted this question (of course,
every question makes me glad, since it’s another opportunity to
dive in and explore the wonderful richness of our Catholic Faith).
But this kind of question makes me especially happy, since it
opens wide the door for someone to return to the Lord in a very
practical, concrete way. So, as the Father said to the Prodigal Son:
Now we must celebrate! And get to answer!
You are (statistically speaking) a member of the largest
single religious group in America today – Catholics who have (for
whatever reason) gotten out of the habit of fully practicing their
faith. You are right where I was some 20 odd years ago. And, as
He did for me, God is about to do something wonderfully beautiful
in your life!
The fact that you’ve asked this question shows that God
has already moved your heart with the touch of His Mercy. First
off, I would invite you to simply reflect for a moment on how God
has done this – what He has done – and then take a bit of time to
simply thank Him for this. For me, it was when God placed these
words in my heart as I was complaining to Him: “Matt, come
home.”
Second, after thanking God for bringing you to this new
beginning, contact a priest in your local parish, and share with him
you desire to – as you so beautifully put it – “get back on track.” I
can assure you that he will be most happy to hear this and to help
you. This will include making a good confession, and in this case,
you might want to ask to make an appointment for this confession.
If you’re anything like I was at this point, the very idea of
confession might be very frightening – even more if you have
forgotten ‘how to do it right.’ Don’t ever let that fear stop you or
slow you down. There’s a whole host of helps available to us now.
I would encourage you to check out, for example, the website:
www.catholicscomehome.org, or any of a host of others such as
www.catholic.com, www.osv.com, or www.usccb.org, and look
for articles on penance, confession, reconciliation, etc. Even if
you don’t do that, simply go to your priest, and ask him to help
you make a good confession. He’ll be happy to help you do just
that. It’s not nearly as scary as the devil makes it seem, and it will
bring great joy and peace to your heart.
Once you’ve been reconciled to God and His Church
through this sacrament, you’re right ‘back on track’, and ready to
begin this new adventure with God. Now, it’s just a matter of
striving to grow each day in holiness with the rest of God’s people
through: prayer (spending some time each day with and for God),
sacraments (getting into the habit of attending Mass and confession
regularly), and striving to grow in virtue.
As Jesus assured us many times, your question has brought
great joy to many others, so thanks for asking, and may this new
beginning bring you to greater and more lasting peace and joy!
