WELLNESS IN ACTION!
Snow Shoe Adventures on the North Shore
In January 2017, the North Shore Early Childhood Association applied for and received funding from the WRWC Community Grant program for a set of multi-age snow shoes. With their funding, they purchased locally made snowshoes in a variety of colours and sizes, to outfit children and parents together.
Snowshoeing is a great family and community gathering activity. It is suitable for all ages and in our climate, is a great activity to keep active during our white season, aka fall, winter, and part of spring! Last winter the children and their families were so excited to participate in the “Winter Fun” program that was offered through the Northshore Early Childhood Association’s Family Resource Centres thanks to funding through WRWC. Many days were spent trekking through the snow and experiencing nature’s winter beauty. One of the youngest participants was only six months old at the time but Mom always brought him along and included him in the outdoor activities. To celebrate the “Winter Fun” Program there was no better activity than a traditional, old-fashioned boil-up that everyone enjoyed. The Northshore Early Childhood Association’s Family Resource Centres are looking forward to another season of snowshoeing and winter fun! The North Shore Early Childhood Association is willing to lend their snowshoes to other groups in the area to generate winter fun and family activity!

Sacred Heart Elementary received a School Wellness Grant to do a
project based on the book, “Only One You” written by Linda Kranz.
This book is about a mama and a papa fish sharing some wisdom with
their son as he gets ready to head out into the world. The book was
shared with our entire school community during the Respect Day
assembly. Students collected two hundred and fifty rocks and each
student and staff member in the school uniquely painted a rock to
resemble a fish. The visiting artist, Jane Reagh, guided everyone
along during the process of painting these fishy rocks. Each rock is
different just like every student in our school.
A stream was created with all 250 painted rocks in the school yard
entrance. The main focus of this project was taken directly from the
book, “There is only one you in this great big world, make it a better
place.” Ms. Reagh painted a mural alongside the stream. This project
has left a wonderful message of individuality and positivity for our
school community to enjoy for many years. Thanks very much to the
Western Regional Wellness Coalition for supporting Only One You!
“Are you living with a long term health condition? Are you having trouble balancing your
health with responsibilities at home and at work? The Workplace Chronic Disease Self-
Management Workshop can help you work towards finding balance by helping you learn to take con-
trol of your health at your workplace and at home and give you tools that you can use to break the
symptom cycle. It isn’t always possible to remove the things that cause these symptoms but it is
possible to look at better ways to manage them. Exercise, healthy eating, better communication with
family, health professionals and coworkers are some of the ‘tools’ that this workshop focuses on.
This is a free program available for workplaces in the Western Health region. These workshops are
designed to fit within the working day and meet the time demands of many workplaces. The ses-
sions are offered twice a week for a total of six weeks and are taught by community leaders who are
living with long term health conditions. If your workplace would like to participate in this program,
please contact the Chronic Disease Self-Management Coordinator at 784-6689 or email
selfmanagement@westernhealth.nl.ca.”

Ingredients:
1 tsp vegetable oil 3 thinly sliced carrots 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 chopped onion 1/2 tsp dried thyme and dried basil pepper 1 lb boneless skinless chicken or
turkey, cut into chunks 1 cup quinoa, rinsed 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour or quinoa flour 1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth 1 cup water 2 cups milk, heated until steaming 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed 1 cup drained canned chopped fresh
tomatoes or diced tomatoes 1/4 cup grated regular Canadian
Parmesan cheese, divided
Step 1 In a large pot, heat oil over medium-high heat. Sauté carrots, garlic, on-
ion, thyme, basil and 1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper for about 5 minutes or until softened.
Add chicken; cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until white all over. Stir in quinoa.
Step 2 Whisk flour into broth and water and stir into pot; bring to simmer, stirring
often. Stir in hot milk. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer, stirring
once, for about 20 minutes until quinoa is almost tender (reduce heat to low, if
necessary, to prevent boiling over).
Step 3 Stir in peas and tomatoes; simmer, uncovered, stirring often, for 5
minutes or until chicken is no longer pink inside and quinoa is tender. Stir in half
of the Parmesan cheese; season with pepper to taste. Sprinkle with remaining
Parmesan if desired.
Weeknight Chicken Quinoa Stew This stew is similar to a risotto but is made with protein-rich quinoa. Combined with chicken, milk, and plenty of carrots, peas and tomatoes, you get all four food groups in one pot –– a must-try recipe, indeed!
