It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English, later British and later still (and currently) monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms. It briefly held the status of a cathedral from 1546–1556, and is a Royal Peculiar.

Westminster Abbey, cea mai veche şi cea mai importantă biserică londoneză, locul unde sunt încoronaţi şi îngropaţi regii Angliei

A treasure house of paintings, stained glass, pavements, textiles and other artifacts, Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation's history are buried or commemorated. Taken as a whole the tombs and memorials comprise the most significant single collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the United Kingdom.

The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint still at its heart.

Portalul de nord

North entrance of Westminster Abbey

Sculpturile în piatră de pe faţada de nord sunt din perioada victoriană

The Abbey's dramatic north façade exemplifies the Gothic design and construction for which this architectural marvel is famous.

Frontonul de de vest

The Gallery of 20th Century Martyrs was added above the Great West Door in 1998 to commemorate contemporary leaders, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., who met tragic ends working for social justice.

Fondată de Eduard Confesorul, care se urcase pe tron în anul 1040 şi care a murit la 8 zile după consacrarea bisericii (28 decembrie 1065)

Edward the Confessor built a new church on the site, which was consecrated on December 28, 1065.

Since William the Conqueror, every British sovereign has been crowned in the abbey except Edward V and Edward VIII, neither of whom was crowned. Many kings and queens are buried near the shrine of Edward the Confessor or in Henry VII’s chapel. The last sovereign to be buried in the abbey was George II (died 1760); since then they have been buried at Windsor Castle.

Lucrările au durat trei secole

Turnurile frontonului de vest au fost adăugate în anul 1745

Este atât biserică naţională cât şi muzeu

The Abbey's two western towers were built between 1722 and 1745 by Nicholas Hawksmoor, constructed from Portland stone to an early example of a Gothic Revival design.
