WHAT DOES

LOVE?

The Qur'anic Understanding Of Love

• Allah is the real source and owner of love.• A person should seek to be worthy of this

blessing by adhering to the Qur'an's morals, and should pray that Allah bestows true love.

• People who do not adhere to the Qur'an's morals live a life bereft of true knowledge, hope, and true friends in both worlds.

Love is a blessing that Allah bestows upon us:

• And affection and purity from Us—he had fear [and respect]. (Surah Maryam, 13)

• As for those who believe and do right actions, the All-Merciful will bestow His love upon them. (Surah Maryam, 96)

• Among His signs is that He created spouses for you of your own kind so that you might find tranquility in them. And He has placed affection and compassion between you. There are certainly signs in that for people who reflect.

(Surah-Rum, 21)

People beloved to Allah

BELIEVERS LOVE ALLAH THE MOST

Yet of mankind are some who take unto themselves (objects of worship which they set as) rivals to Allah, loving them with a love like (that which is the due) of Allah (only)--Those who believe are stauncher in their love for Allah--Oh, that those who do evil had but known, (on the day) when they behold the doom, that power belongeth wholly to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment! Baqarah 2:165

Loving believers

• When a man loves his brother for sake of Allah, he should tell him that he loves him. (Abu Dawud)

• Give gifts to each other, as this will make you love one another. (Sahih Muslim)

• Give one another gifts and love one another. Give one another food. This will produce barakah in your daily sustenance.(Al-Shaybani, Taysir al-'usul ila Jami al-'usul, vol. 16, p. 239)

The Concept of Forgiveness in Islam

• Qur'an expresses it in three terms, • (1)Afw means to pardon, to excuse. 42:40,

2:187 and 5:95• (2) Safhu, means to turn away from a sin or a

misdeed, ignore, etc. Examples 2:109, 15:85 and 43:89

• (3) Ghafara means to cover, to forgive and to remit. Examples 2:263, 42:37 and 43:43

Prophet (SAW) was most forgiving• In one Hadith the Prophet (SAW) said that Allah has commanded him

about nine things. One of them he mentioned was “that I forgive those who do wrong to me.”

• When Prophet (SAW) went to Ta’if to preach the message of Allah, its people mistreated him. They abused him and hit him with stones. When he took shelter under a tree, the angel of Allah visited him and told him that Allah sent him to destroy the people of Ta’if.

• The Prophet -peace be upon him- prayed to Allah to save the people of Taif, because what they did was out of their ignorance.

• He said, “O Allah, guide these people, because they did not know what they were doing.”
