What is an Angel Investor?

• Angels are often experienced, high net-worth individuals, who invest personal funds in early stage start-up ventures

• Angels typically invest at the seed stage and may provide follow-on funding to start-ups that need money and other resources to continue growing

• Angels often invest in sectors they know and play an active role; often mentoring the CEO and assuming a role on the company’s board

• Canadian angels are estimated to invest between $500M to $1B annually in Canada’s growth-oriented and scalable companies

• The Ontario Securities Commission estimates there are up to 500,000 accredited investors in Canada, but only a fraction actively invest in early-stage companies

• In 2012, the National Angel Capital Organization estimated that the average investment round was approximately $315,00 with an average valuation of $2.1M
