What Is Life Coaching?

How To Recognize REAL

Coaching

Hi, I’m Scott

It’s Trendy to be a “Coach”Far too many people are claiming to be coaches…

I wanted to put this video together to help people who are either looking for a life coach, or want to become a life coach themselves.

Why? Because coaching is a science. There are methodologies, techniques and tools that are particular to coaching. The practice of Life Coaching has been benchmarked. We’ll cover these benchmarks in this course.

What We’ll Cover In This Course

• What coaching is not…

• What a Life Coach is… More specifically what is expected of a real life coach. I’ll introduce you to the ICF… What are the required skills and core competencies a coach is required to master?

• Now that you know what to look for… The outcome I want for you is to have the information you need to recognize a real Coach and Coach Training program.

Coaching Is Not…

1. Therapy: Focuses on past events. It deals with a clients mental associations around past events. Therapy usually addresses an emotional trauma of some kind relating to past events and, hopefully, learns to cope with that event.

What Coaching Is Not

2. Consulting: Consultants concern themselves with organizational change; an expert, an experienced professional, delivers reports and presentations to that end. Then they tell the company what they should do.

What Coaching Is Not

3. Mentoring: Mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person in a particular field, discipline or activity. They’ve done it before, now it’s your turn to succeed.

What Do Life Coaches Do?

Coaching is a very different kind of conversation…

• Coaches are partners with their clients. Coaches approach their coachees more as equals. In fact, the coachee is considered the expert of their life and as the only one who can access their own inner resources, wisdom and experience.

What Do Life Coaches Do?

• The coach is the expert in facilitating the conversation that brings out the most resourceful depths of the coachee.

• Pure coaching does not entail giving advise. If someone ever offers you coaching and suggests anything related to “giving advise”… RUN

What Do Life Coaches Do?

ICF?! Who Are They?

• The International Coaching Federation (ICF) provides independent certification, and builds a wide network of credentialed coaches.

I’ll define coaching further as:

The Coaching Conversation is an ongoing, intentional and skilled conversation that

empowers a person, or group, to fully live out their calling.

Unique Benefits of Real CoachingPersonal Attention

A coach focuses on the agenda of the client.

The client decides which goals or problems to work on, not the coach.

Unique Benefits of Real Coaching

You get to learn about YOU

A coach uses powerful questions to generate new learning.

The coach does not teach or advise, but asks questions and listens with great intuition.

Unique Benefits of Real CoachingFollow YOUR Bliss

A coach encourages action.

The client sets their own goals, develops his or her own action steps, not the assignments of the

coach.

Unique Benefits of Real Coaching

Not Just Talk

A coach supports change.

A coach follows-up to support personal learning, growth, and change while holding the coachee

accountable. A coach assists with any resistance to change…

That's what REAL Coaches do!
