What is Social Media?Any online technology or practice that

people use to share

(content, opinions, insights, experiences, perspectives and media).

Examples of Social Media Sites:

Why should you care about Social Media?

YouTube = 10 percent of all internet traffic (source: Ellacoya Networks)

YouTube & Wikipedia among top brands(source: brandchannel.com)

Five of the top 10 websites are social(source: Alexa)

Over 100 million blogs exist(source: Technorati)

120,000 new blogs launched every day(source: Technorati)

1.5 million posts per day (17 per second)(source: Technorati)

Why should you care about Social Media?

• People are not just demographics anymore. To connect with them you need to understand relationships are more powerful than marketing

People are connecting.

• They are commenting about your business.

• They are sharing good and bad comments.

• Do you know what they are saying?

Ok I get it now what? Types of Sites.

• Content Posting Sites.

• Content Sharing & Rating Sites.

• Mixed Sites.

Today most of the big sites are mixed sites where users can post, blog, rate, and share.

Posting: What is a Blog

• A blog (web log) is a type of website or part of a website. • Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of

commentary, descriptions of events.• Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. • Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and

even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites

• A wiki is a website that allows the creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages

• Wikis are used to create collaborative works. • Examples

– Community websites – Corporate intranets– Knowledge management systems– Encyclopedias.

• An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.

• Often the post need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes visible.

Sharing and Rating Sites.

• Content Sharing, Messaging, and Social Bookmaking sites. Allow users to share links to content.

Buzz.yahoo.com• Social rating website made for people to

discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet,

• Users submit links and stories and place them into categories

• Users voting and commenting on submitted links and stories.

The “Big Dogs” of Social Media.

What is ?

• Twitter is a website which offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read messages called tweets.

• Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page.

• Tweets are publicly visible by default• Users subscribe to other users' tweets – this is

known as following and subscribers are known as followers or tweeps (Twitter + peeps).

What is ?

• Twitter’s strength is openness.– Open to everyone and every platform.– Real-time.– Searchable.– You can see who follows who and they can

see who you follow.

• LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site.

• It is mainly used for professional networking Connecting with old class mates, business associates and industry groups.

• It is the Rotary club, the Association group, the Professional group on the internet.

• Example: Linkedin.com

What is ?

• Worlds biggest video sharing site.• Great for posting videos online.• You can create a channel and post videos.• People can watch your videos and

comment.• You can link your videos using Twitter,

Facebook, rating sites, and email.• Example:youtube.com

• Facebook is a social networking service and website

• Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages,

• Including automatic notifications when they update their profile.

• Users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics.

• More than 500 million active users

• 50% of active users log on to Facebook in any given day.

• Average user has 130 friends.

• People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.

Mobile

• There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.

• People that use Facebook on their mobile devices are twice as active on Facebook than non-mobile users.
