REASON BEHIND HUMAN ERROR

“At the centre of any decision-making process is the individual decision-maker who experiences demands and pressures from a number of sources.”

Human behavior is the result of influence.

Powerful influences can cause leaders to become greedy, selfish and demonstrate poor judgment.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

To research and analyze what leaders do to make things go wrong in society. By learning failure we can determine what is essential for a leader today and what he needs to work on for success in the future.

METHODOLOGY

Our group collectively decided to research about what leaders do, to make things go wrong for our group project. Our group split the duties of finding articles through the database during the second week. After we found each article we came together to create our proposal. Once we narrowed our questions to three total, we divided one question per two group members.

ELEMENTS OF BAD LEADERSHIP

What characterizes a bad leader?Does religion influence leaders and their decisions? Does unconscious activity in the brain play a role in poor leadership decisions?

LEADERSHIP AND THINKING PATTERNS

DOES UNCONSCIOUS ACTIVITY IN THE BRAIN PLAY A ROLE IN POOR LEADERSHIP DECISIONS?

Digging deeper to decipher what went wrong in the decision making process of a qualified leader who

has positive intentions.

STEP 1

BRAIN ACCESESS TWO HARWIRED PROCESSEORS

IN OUR BODY

• We use pattern recognition to draw assumptions based on the information compiled from previous experiences.

STEP 2

EMOTIONALLY TAGS THE EXPERIENCE, BASED ON PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES

• Emotional tagging adheres the assumptions to experiences and the thoughts stored in our memories, thus resulting in the decision to pay attention or not.

STEP 3

A CONCLUSION IS THEN MADE BASED ON COMPILED

INFORMATION FROM THE FIRST TWO STEPS

THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS

THE DECISION PROCESS MISLEAD…

• Most of the time we can rely on our pattern recognition and emotional tagging to lead us in the right direction

• At times it can let us down, causing us to think we understand a situation when in actuality we do not understand at all

• Three specific factors were the found to cause the hardwired process to be unintentionally mislead and distorted.

RED FLAG FACTORS

The presence of inappropriate self-

interest

The presence of distorting

attachments

The presence of misleading memories

When confronted with a decision, the brains decision-making process kicks in, and the red flag factors can jump in to mislead the process.

The Three Red Flag Factors

• Information from the pattern recognition stage is taken and the importance we place on it is distorted to attain personal preference.

• The information is distorted in biased way.• We start perceiving the patterns we want or prefer to see.

• Memories that seem comparable or relevant to a current situation at hand, but in fact is not and the memory misguides our thinking process.

• Bonds are formed when people become attached to places, people or things

• These bonds can affect our judgment and cloud how to appropriately handle the situation.

The presence of inappropriate self-interest

The presence of distorting attachments

The presence of misleading memories

HOW DO WE FIX OUR DECISION MAKING PROCESS?

Understand how the decision making process works

Minimize Red Flags Anticipate situations that may involve a

lack of judgment• Safeguard yourself to prevent poor

decision making

DOES RELIGION NEGATIVELY INFLUENCE LEADERS TO PERFORM IMMORALLY?

Religion is a set of cultural beliefs that establishes individuals’ moral values and ethics.

RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD

•“The influence of religion-based workplace spirituality on business leaders' decision-making: An inter-faith study” is a report conducting an interview on several Sri Lankan business leaders of different religious background.

LEADERS HAVE AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF RESPONSIBILITY THUS THEIR DECISIONS MAY BE DERIVED THROUGH THEIR INTUITIVE DECISION MAKING BRAIN, WHICH HAS PRECONCEPTIONS OF RELIGION, VALUES AND ETHICS.

CAN RELIGION BASED WORKPLACE CREATE CONFLICT AMONGST LEADERS AND WORKERS

WHO DO NOT SHARE THE SAME RELIGIOUS BELIEFS?

VIDEO TBD

Just as the United States of America separates Church from State, it is of best interest to separate religion and business.

LET’S RECAP!!

Bad leadership is like a disease, it infects everyone around and involved in it.

It is important to catch the problem early on in order to prevent catastrophic results to the company

Each decision should be well thought out and unique to its situation

Leaders should hold natural qualities and characteristics before being named a leader

Business should be about the company and the success of the products and people involved

Religion should always be kept separate from the business in order to save the company
