• MLK’s Christian faith and admiration of Indian leader Mahatma Ghandi’s non-violent protests meant he believed in non-violent direction action = protesting peacefully in a highly visible way to produce maximum publicity.

• Picketing = Standing outside a segregated shop or diner and asking people not to use it.

• Boycotts = not using any service that discriminated against black people.

• Sit-ins = Sitting at a ‘whites only’ lunch counter waiting to be served.
