Governors and Ofsted InspectionsGovernor Network ConferenceMay 2011Sheila LynnCornwall School Improvement Team

What you will be judged on

• The effectiveness of the governing body in challenging and supporting theschool so that weaknesses are tackled decisively and statutory responsibilities met.

The Ofsted Evaluation Schedule

•Governors discharge their statutory responsibilities and ensure that pupils and staff are safe. •They are well organised, are visible in the school community, and support staff and pupils. •Most governors know the strengths and weaknesses of the school, understand the challenges it faces and are directly involved in setting appropriate priorities for improvement. •The governing body holds the school to account for tackling important weaknesses. •Governors engage often with parents and pupils and respond quickly to their views and any significant concerns they may have.

What the inspector will be looking for

• Data – all should have an overview and those with a particular responsibility should have more detail –e.g. SEN, EYFS, English, mathematics, etc

• School Improvement Plan –all have an overview of the key priorities and more detail according to their role

• Monitoring – most should be actively involved, all should know of key actions and findings –regular feature of HT report

• Promote the work of the governing body in the school and the wider community

• Be well organised

Plenary-time for reflection

• What have been your main learning points?

• Next steps – as an individual– as a governing body

• We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act, but a habit”
