New! Access 2013 Web Apps!

• What is an Access Web app?

– created in Access 2013 or SharePoint 2013

– deployed to SharePoint 2013

– available to users via a common browser

To create an Access Web app…

• Start Access 2013– Choose Custom web app

or

– Choose nonDesktop (Desktop = traditional) templateor

• Create an Access Web app from within SharePoint 2013

A desktop database is not…

• …an Access Web app• There is no easy way to convert an

existing desktop database to an Access Web app

An Access Web app is not...

• …an Excel or Word Office app• Insert tab, Apps for Office

An (Access) Web app is….

• A fully functional database application– Tables– Queries– Forms– Reports– Macros (recall Macros in 2010 were improved)– (not modules, no VBA)

(I wish they would have called it a Web database)

An (Access) Web app requires….

• SharePoint Server 2013• SQL Server 2012 • Configure Access Services

SharePoint 2013 – Access Services

(Access) Web app progression…

• Access 2007, 2010 had the ability to share tables, forms through SharePoint, .accdb

• Access 2013 web app file = .accdw

(uses SQL Server 2012 for tables)– Complete Web-deployable database /

application– Hybrid databases still have .accdb extension

• “desktop” vs. “web” icons in database file
