•Where have you heard this word before?

•What are some examples you can think of?

•What is Balance?

a Teeter-totter or a scale Is Balanced when Weight is even on both sides…

A BaLance Beam forces you to keep your weight even so you

don’t fall off.

Balance Means:

KEEPINGWEIGHT

EVEN

In Art There is an Idea Called “VISUAL WEIGHT”.

The more “visual weight” something has, the more it ‘attracts’ your eye.

This means you notice it more than other things in the picture.

DO YOU SEE VISUAL WEIGHT IN THESE PICTURES?

Visual Weight can be created using:

Colour Empty Spaces

SizeContrast

Variety

movement

For example: Dark colors ‘weigh’ more visually than light colors.

Visual Balance is like physical Balance

because it is about “keeping weight even”,

only this time it means

visual weight!

There are several ways to create

VISUAL BALANCE :

Symmetrical BalanceBoth sides of an imaginary line are the same: like looking in a mirror .

Asymmetrical BalanceEach side of the imaginary line is different

but each has the same visual weight.

Elements radiate out from the center creating a focal point.

Radial Balance

Crystallographic BalanceThere is the same visual weight spread out over the entire area - like in a

pattern.

VISUAL BALANCE is the even use of

visual weight.By carefully placing the

different parts of a picture we can make a Balanced composition.
